@yogthos Shanghai-Beijing is over 1000km in a straight line. Yet, I always (4-5 times) took the ~5 hours (I think in the beginning it was 4.5 hours) train, rather than the hassle (and waiting) of airports and crammed space on plane. With 230V in the wide and comfortable seat, self-service of coffee when I need refill and splendid view (if Business class at front window), flights simply can't compete.

@feld @yogthos agree tsa is useless but flights are still horribly expensive and much more prone to delays. trains are always the better solution topography permitting 👍

@feld @yogthos one cherry picked example. still better than a plane, plus that was an auto train for people specifically vacationing in florida who want to bring their car...

ok here's an article from last summer when travel was peaking> 17-hour trip from Lorton, Va., to Sanford, Fla., into a 35-hour nightmare.> More than one-quarter of Amtrak customers encountered delays in June, according to on-time performance data, with an average delay of 76 minutes. This is never going to get better if we have to share our passenger rail with freighthttps://archive.is/R2Llk

@feld @yogthos plus we have no investment in rail yet it outperforms in safety and reliability. imagine if our govt dumped the money going to airlines into improving right of ways.

@feld @yogthos in just 2021 the US cancelled ~100k flights which is much more of a time waste than the auto train delay!

@feld @yogthos @doomy Not wise to judge train travel as a whole by Amtrak. America is intentionally bad at trains as a part of a cia coordinated anti-communist propaganda campaign.

@yogthos the distorted view of trains here in the US is strange. Take the Boring Company for example. They say they are going to build tunnels under cities that will have trams to carry people around to reduce or bypass traffic. Cities are clamoring to have them dig a hole for them. Meanwhile subways have existed for over 100 years and are in use around the world, including parts of the US.

@undergroundbeef @yogthos Also, the Boring Company is a scam to actively destroy any chance cities might adopt high speed rail systems because the company's owner also owns a car company and would rather you buy one of those than get on a train.

@yogthos The distance from Boston to Philadelphia is about the same as that from Amsterdam to Paris. Surprise! There’s a train there too (Acela), with nice seats etc. The big problem the USA has is that it’s a large, empty country on a huge, empty continent. European countries are small, densely populated countries on a smallish peninsula off of Asia called Europe.

@brianonbarrington @yogthos yes, the US has wide swaths with low population density, but New England’s rail network is a joke to central Europe’s both in max speed and network density. Population density isn’t the reason. Lack of investment is.

We must operate within the boundaries of our existing system. Train travel is not getting any better any time soon. Maybe never. I do not believe you can convince enough of America to support the massive changes required to achieve this or acquire the land needed for new corridors without the use of state violence.

@feld @yogthos @doomy Don’t you know Amtrak sucks in 99.9% of the country? Passenger v cargo lines duel for the same rails, it’s poorly funded. Biden is trying to fix that. With euro class passenger shuttling, America would prosper in many ways.

@Nero @skylar @yogthos Look at Africa and tell us how well they maintain our infrastructure. The argument of “Why can’t America have nice things”, our government loves bureaucracy and commies, so all our money goes to housing and feeding nigs, goes to funding wars around the world, and goes to pockets of those that hate us.

Consider that to build high speed rail we will have to go through the process of:- In many cities, buying and destroying entire city blocks because we need a new straight path for the high speed rail. It won't displace white people, I can assure you of that- spending trillions of dollars acquiring land for the new rail corridors because people and corporations aren't stupid and will refuse to sell for anything but highest possible dollar. So many owners you need to broker deals with it may take decades to settle- millions of Americans in rural America whose towns only exist and thrive because of the highway traffic that goes through their towns. Do you think they will be in favor of newfound poverty so we can have trains? You're destroying their way of life

They're already doing a swell job convincing half the country that electric vehicles are a plan by the far left to take away freedom to travel because ... electricity rationing, or something? They haven't started to invest in anti-train rhetoric and they've already successfully convinced Fox viewers that e.g., AOC wants to make your car illegal and force you to take a train that only arrives once a day
