THREADDave is not here!About five weeks ago something happened that was a bit funny and apropos. It actually related to my handle on this channel and relates back to my early days as a competitive swimmer. It's a big circle but I find it amusing. Hopefully you will to.

Just over five weeks ago I was contacted by a senior leader within the Secure Network Services group. She mentioned that I had been nominated to lead two teams as Scrum Master. This was unexpectedly good news, I had been trying in vain for almost three years to land an Agile-related role within my company. I was looking outside for better opportunities, so this was a blessing. Her question was "Did anybody get with you to tell you?"

My answer was "No, this is the first I heard of it."I was very happy but a bit confused. She went on.Well, you have been nominated to be a Kanban Lead for two teams within SNS.Great! She went to look at the roster that was used to associate all the people who were part of this change. They couldn't find me.Why you ask?

They had name listed as:Dave AdamavichI am not making this up, instead of "Doug" I was "Dave".So in a sense, Dave wasn't here...I was always here, just not listed correctly. She fixed the problem and got everything squared away with the teams I was going to KL for.

Back in 1982, this happened a lot during my early competitive swimming days. One more than a few event listings, I was listed as "Dave" and not "Doug." Thankfully my last name is fairly distinctive so I always knew it was me who was in a given event. Still, it got to the point where my teammates would ask "Who is Dave?" and I would reply "Dave's not here!"Akin to the Cheech and Chong skit from a few years before.I found it amusing and still laugh about it.

@sambadave66 Don't think so, she was a Texas lady with kids.My company is hopelessly woke but this keeps me there a bit longer. I'll use that time to hone my skills and prepare for the next step. Chances are I'll need to go with a much smaller company but I'm ok with that. My last four employers are Fortune 100 companies...and I will gladly take my leave of them without regrets.Just setting myself up for what's next, probably this time next year Good Lord willing.

@Davez_Not_Here Nice story. Thanks for the share! You're quite a talented storyteller, it seems 🙂Incompetence with keeping names can indeed be a pain in the ass. In fact, the electrician who connected my parents' house to the grid wrote our last name on the light towards the street with an extra letter. Ever since, the sign has an ugly space in the middle of our name 🥴Glad that you seem to be doing better. And to hear the story behind ``Dave's Not Here!'' was awesome 🙂@sambadave66

@Lumuz @sambadave66 The funny thing is, my last name isn't THAT difficult. Unlike some Eastern European names, it doesn't have strange characters, odd accent marks, or weird letter combinations. Compared to others, our last name is fairly simple. The surgeon who attended to me is a younger black woman whose first and last names appear to be of West African origin. I am embarrassed to admit I didn't master pronouncing it correctly.Even her office calls her "Doctor O."

@Lumuz @sambadave66 She didn't have a West African accent so I think she was born here in the USA. When she came in on Sunday to let me know that I should be able to go home later that day, she noticed I was watching a segment on Formula 1 testing. She said "Oh, Formula 1. You must be a fan." In my (drug-induced) foggy state, I said "Yes, been a fan since 1985." That was about all I could muster.
