Do you really need to run your own lightning node to use Bitcoin Lightning? If so, there’s no way it’ll actually catch on.

@alex Not at all. There are many options, all the way from running your own full node to using a fully custodial account. Some of the most popular Lightning apps use a hybrid model where you keep one channel open from your "light node" on the phone to a well-connected full node of the app provider.

@alex There's a new FOSS implementation for custodial Lightning accounts, since the original lndhub one is deprecated now:https://github.com/getAlby/lndhub.goWe use this at @kosmos for example, and have wired it up so that all our user addresses are also a Lightning Address.https://lightningaddress.com

@alex In the future, Lightning will also be a backbone for layer 3 networks, like e.g. https://fedimint.org, which allows to create community banks, but with full spending privacy (using Chaumian e-cash backed by bitcoin).

@alex ... the hybrid functionality is completely abstracted away from the UI, of course, so users don't have to see or think about channels at all.

@alex If Satoshi had a time machine, he would have gone back in time before he created bitcoin to kill myself so lighting could have never been a thing.

@alex no, there are public Lightning nodes just like there are public full nodes and you don’t have to run a full node to use normal Bitcoin.

@elw Can you give me a URL to a public lightning node?

@alex Muun wallet will let you do Lightning transactions without running your own node.

@jeff Thanks. I downloaded Zap and have been really confused, especially because none of the QR codes online actually work with it.
