Thoroughgood escaped slavery during the chaos that ensued when the Confederates fired on Fort Sumter. He went to Baltimore and blended in among the free African Americans. He went by the nickname Thorny Good, which he thought suited him better than Thoroughgood.In Baltimore, he worked as a waiter. Later he joined the army and went to Texas with the all-Black 24th Regiment of the U.S. Calvary. After being discharged in 1874, he returned to Baltimore and married a girl named Annie Robinson.2/

Thorney Good and Annie opened a grocery and dry goods store on the corner of Dolphin and Division streets. One day the electric company came to install a power pole on the sidewalk directly in front of the store. Annie marched outside and told the workmen it was her sidewalk and she didn’t want a pole in the middle of it. She shooed them away. They returned with a court order allowing them to install a pole. Annie came outside with her kitchen chair . . . 3/

@Teri_Kanefield my pet peeve raised its fur again. Calvary is the place where three guys were crucified a couple of thousand years ago. The Cavalry wasn't there to save them.

@Nothingisamiss At any rate, you can see why I throw a nutty when people say "Why are all these appeals allowed! It's slowing everything down!"Appeals are how the NAACP ended racial segregation.Also, our system isn't designed for rapid change. That's how Trump was prevented from installing himself as dictator.Change happens slowly and with great effort so we must persist.

@kattemann I don't think you meant that post the way it sounded.It sounds as if a biographer is not supposed to write that Thurgood Marshall's grandfather joined the Calvary.

@Teri_Kanefield @Nothingisamiss when I was a child, someone told me "Maturity is being able to delay immediate satisfaction in favor of long term gains". Its hard, my kids would call it "Adulting"! Do not despair, we will get there and it will have long lasting consequences. We must make certain we get Democratic Representatives and Senators elected in 2024. Our work must never cease.

@Teri_Kanefield This is great! Thurgood Marshall's widow, Cecelia was a member of the church I attended-she was its altar guild. Over 80 carrying heavy laden trays of vessels, etc up steep steps, wearing 3 inch heels!
