“A black woman invented the telescope.”A few years ago I took a tour of Cape Canaveral and the launch facility. While looking at the Transporter Crawler tracks, the tour guide repeatedly (like 6 different times) told us that it was invented by a woman.The Transporter Crawler is the giant tractor used to move rockets from the VAB out to the launch pad while they remain vertical. As such, it has to remain balanced to prevent it from tipping, and in the case of the space shuttle, prevent sparks that may ignite the rocket's solid fuel boosters.(1)The Russians, on the other hand, used trains and transports them horizontally. Typical NASA.(2)Anyway, after the trip, I decided to look up this woman who designed the vehicle that the NASA tour guide was so proud off. To be honest, the story stank to me. NASA projects are so large that there isn't a single designer, but rather team leaders working with dozens of men.So was there a woman? If there was, was she a team leader? A contractor from a company?I couldn't find her. After a few days of looking, I started to think she didn't exist at all. Then I found a forum post from 2005. Turns out the lead designer was a man named Donald Buchanan (nytimes.com/2005/06/28/us/donald-buchanan-82-designer-of-nasas-rocket-carriers-dies.html). What really amazed me was the second post. Someone was told the same story by a tour guide 42 years earlier!(3)Now the question's why? It's a rather stupid thing to lie about, but it's a consistent one. Maybe it wasn't a lie, but then who is she, and why does her name seem to be a NASA secret? NASA considered many options to transport large rockets, and "a car that drives the rocket out vertically" doesn't take a genius to land on. In fact, looking at what Space X and the Russian's do, it's seemingly the most obtuse solution to the problem.Obviously, NASA demanded that launch vehicles be assembled and transported vertically (likely for reliability reasons), so simply proposing to transport it on a giant tractor isn't that creative of an idea given the conditions imposed. Plus the vehicle is so large that a single person couldn't have design it. It would be like a man invented the Boeing 747.So it isn't like this woman, whoever she is, could have said "we should transport it vertically", unless she also proposed the Vertical Assembly Building which necessitated it's construction in the first place.So maybe it's a mistake? The company that assembled it is the 'Marion Power Shovel Company'. Maybe the name was shortened to Marion, and then tour guides quickly assumed Marion was a woman (like Maid Marian), and then developed a whole backstory for her?But I would think that someone at NASA would have corrected the tour guides at some point after 40 years. It's also strange that they never mentioned the name of the company, but lots about this supposed woman who seemed to never exist, like how she was a young grad student.It could be a forgotten half truth, maybe there was a woman who worked on the project for NASA or Marion, gained some fame for it, and then overtime it turned into her inventing the entire thing.But if it was a game of telephone, how did the story of the mysterious sole female engineer appear so quickly? The first crawler-transporter rolled out in 1966, and the earliest proof I can see for the story was 1973, so I can assume it was shared before that too, possibly as soon as it was made.My best guess is that it's a lie that someone keeps going. @Elliptica @Hoss Most likely a woman was a lead in the project and the original tour mentioned it as a point of interest, and over the years it was simplified to a woman pioneered the project.Those working at the time probably didn’t think anything of it, which allowed the fable to grow and be uncontested.

There was another one before that too I think. There was a space probe being launched and a bunch of jew media sites picked a woman on the team and credited her with writing the software (apparently based on the number of commits). Thing is, she wasn't writing the software, she was just merging it into main. She even came out after the articles and corrected the record.

However, not a single N1 successfully launched, so I think the horizontal transport system may fail for larger rockets, which is why both Nasa and Spacex use it for their largest rockets (though it did work for Buran, so that might not be the case, or the Russians figured it out how to solve certain problems).

@avia @Aviz @Elliptica @Hoss Did NASA do anything good after Apollo except for NERVA (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NERVA which in the late 1980s they made a point of getting together the old f** white men to capture the unwritten knowledge they had, per a child of one in my social circle) and SCIENCE!!! ?Musk has had to largely rebuild all that from scratch (and better), including per Jerry Pournelle simply the ability to build really big rockets like the new stainless steel models about to be tested, we’d lost so much in aero-astro human capabilities.
