Thinking of the Fediverse & Mastodon. It may end up as a mass of city state echo chambers,each with their own potential autocrat, a process of balkanisation.I see no benefit to that, but I think it is inevitable.

@peterrelph2 That would require all instances defederating from each other, which doesn't seem very likely to me. More likely is that there will be *some* balkanization as the fedi grows, but it will mainly be those with the most extreme views whose instances get siloed from everyone else.

@BarrenPlanet The 'potential autocrat' risk is significant I think. Unchecked power or authority does not end well.
