@ana >against the backdrop of a deepening opioid crisisUgh the fed response is the reason the opioid crisis got so horrifically worse than it was, in any just world the "people" responsible would be beheaded right next to the Purdue pharma execs who started it

@ana My leg was shattered in 27 pieces the doctors/nurses treated me with suspicion and annoyance when it came to pain. Initially I was concerned about taking pain medications at all having heard stories they give you too much. LOL no they treated me like some kind of crazed junkie for still being in pain at 5mg of oxy a day just 3 days after the accident and major surgery. The pain lasted for weeks and it's like a nightmare in the back of my mind all the time. I'm OK now... but shaken.

@ana It's been a year since I was in the hospital. It took me a long time to realize my sleeping problems were due to the nightmares about the hospital and the feeling of being trapped in pain and helpless to do anything about it. I discovered listening to heavy metal music helped. That's what I did for days, holding on to the idea that the pain couldn't last forever. with an injury you have that hope of it stopping -- those with chronic pain? I don't know what I would have done.

@futurebird @ana Well for chronic pain nothing beats opiates. Prescribed by an MD of course coupled with monitoring. But they definitely have their down sides. Slowed gut motility/constipation, tolerance/dependency (not really an issue for terminal patients), and too much stops one's breathing.

@BrunoMcGee @futurebird @ana a worse part to their dependancy issues is how they frequently actually make pain worse aging to the cycle of increased use... Opiates, in my opinion are only good for short usage.

@ana Of course I read about how pain works extensively when I could concentrate. There are complexities: pain meds can be addictive and loose effectiveness over time. The worst case people go on higher doses & suddenly get suddenly cut off. Which fuels the illegal drug trade. This leads to deaths: blackmarket drugs are often tainted. Drugs themselves aren't that directly dangerous. When you notice how long it's taken for Narcan to become OTC the contempt for "addicts" becomes apparent.

@ana "contempt for addicts"Isn't just something that impacts people who take illegal drugs or people who abuse prescriptions or people who have high dose prescriptions. I was treated with that contempt for weeks in the hospital I worried was a bad person because the doses they gave weren't enough. couldn't sleep or concentrate. pain just kept going & going & going- I'd pound the pillow. Try to do maths. Listen to music. Hold my breath. Pinch my palm till it would bled. But I was trapped.

@ana My roommate in the hospital who'd been in longer than me for even more broken bones said "they won't do anything unless you scream all night" but it seemed rude to keep her up with screaming. My personality is different after that experience. I never want to go back to a hospital. I need to figure out what I can do to avoid such a thing happening again.

@futurebird @ana I've lived with chronic pain for 26 years now. It changes you... I've become very short tempered. Likely I've developed borderline personality disorder. Relying on doctors for pain management is absurd. It seems they way over prescribe or don't give nearly adequate amounts of pain meds. I currently control pain with kratom which seems to have way less side effects than true opiates. I would also caution on GABA inhibitors as they can cause hallucinations and muscle spasms.

@twizzt Yeah I've been off those for months. Didn't enjoy the side effects but when I really needed it? I could have cried it made such a big difference.

@twizzt @futurebird @ana I use kratom for my pain as well purely because getting doctors to believe you experience pain is apparently virtually impossible even if you can hardly walk from it

@twizzt @futurebird @ana my experience with opiates, and many people i've talked to is that it barely relieves the pain and actually just numbs your mind. one person said he was watching TV at his mom's place and didn't notice she had changed the channel three times but was still in pain from surgery. weed killed the pain. he told his doctor to keep the pills cause they don't work.

@futurebird @ana i find that to have been true for 40 years though.. not treating pain unless you're performing it, loudly, rudely, indecorously.Like you've never had pain until this moment, are terrified and confused by it, and are a toddler with no sense of appropriate behavior or ability to regulate one's emotions. It is outright barbaric how they ignore pain now. Here, have enough ibuprofen to destroy your liver. But no pain medication.

@debonairetoast @ana There was totally this idea that the fact that I went to the effort to try to explain what I was dealing with in a clear calm precise way meant that it couldn't possibly be that bad. Also that I seemed better when I had visitors "you seemed fine when your husband was here" WELL DUH of course I seemed better I was happy to see him. All this over if they'd give a 2nd 5mg dose of oxy, which I'm told isn't that much. After 6 days they stopped giving it at all.

@futurebird @debonairetoast @ana As a nurse I wouldn't have let it that be.There's WHO guidelines to follow.Pain relief is a human right.Use better drugs than oxy. That's all.

@futurebird @debonairetoast @ana And there's scales to measure pain, nurses must use them. Otherwise it's not good care providing.

@beatricejess They had one of those scales with these faces on it and when I see it I feel nauseous. Gives me flashbacks. :(It didn't really matter where I said the pain was on the scale they just kept giving me Tylenol.

@futurebird @beatricejess i had an ovary removed. They gave me ibuprofen for 5 days. Refused actual pain meds.Today's medical practice has embraced the concept of treating every patient like a drug addict. Legally mandated.

@debonairetoast @futurebird @beatricejess I personally can’t take opioids. They don’t take pain away, just keep me awake & jittery. I’ve had shoulder, Achilles heel, a hysterectomy & stomach surgeries. My PT griped at me for not taking my meds during PT. When I tell doctors I can’t take opioids, and the meds don’t work, they act like I’m angling for larger doses. I finally just started telling them I’m allergic… I just need something that works…

@johnettesnuggs @debonairetoast @futurebird @beatricejess opiates don't work for me either. Have you tried kratom? It isn't for everyone either, but it takes enough of the edge off for me to live my life.

@twizzt @debonairetoast @futurebird @beatricejess I have not. Medical grade Ibuprofen works well and Naproxen works for me, but they are so bad for the liver. I have applied for a medical marijuana card, since I’m retired from teaching now, but I haven’t heard anything yet.
