🚨 Important: Gandi.net has been acquired by Your.Online 🚨 There is a backstory here - which I will explain. The TL;DR: if you have any trust or whatsoever in Gandi, you should seriously reconsider.Your.online was previously known as TWS (Total Webhosting Solutions), one of the three big investors in the Dutch hosting market. Together with Team.blue and Group.one they own the majority of the hosting brands. If TWS acquires a new brand, the prices skyrocket [1/3]

threefold (or more) being more of a rule rather than an exception. Support staff is fired and/or relocated - so whatever the issue, you'll have to wait multiple days before a human response. If any. This is really counter to what Gandi stands for, but no doubt that the acquisition by TWS will have a negative impact from this point forward. For instance, Versio is one of the TWS brands. Their forum is currently filled with complaints about broken websites, servers with outages, [2/3]

and expired domains. And yes, it was claimed that Versio should remain independent and that the acquisition should not have an impact on the brand. At the risk of being abundant: do your due diligence and check the risk and impact of this acquisition if you have anything hosted / registered with Gandi.[3/3]

$18 for .net renewal is not cheap though @greyor, unless Gandhi offers some special features that you and @h3artbl33d didn’t mention.

@cnx @greyor What I really liked about them is their attitude and philosophy. And certain willing to pay a premium for that. And yes - they really aren't the cheapest. I didn't have the bulk of the domains with them for that reason.

Sorry, @h3artbl33d, I meant on the mentioned attitude and philosophy. I’m looking for criteria for choosing a new registrar for a domain I’m renting.

@cnx Mainly laid out here: https://www.gandi.net/en-US/no-bullshitAlso, for me it helped that they are EU based.

Indeed, @xarvos, hence it’s only for criteria to look for, also because Gandi doesn’t support DNSSEC for .gdn anyway. Cc: @h3artbl33d

@pilky @h3artbl33d @simon The same, I originally move from OVH to Gandi for domains and was really happy with it.Porkbun is regularly recommended, but they are US based. Is there an equivalent (good tech, good support, no bullshit) in Europe?

@h3artbl33d Anyone have a suggestion for a #DomainRegistrar that does .es, .tz, & .fun for reasonable prices?

@liebach If you have a limited number of TLDs, you can consider becoming a registrar for those TLDs. No clue to whether that is an actual possibility in your scenario.I am seriously considering that myself.

@snaggen @liebach @h3artbl33d @njalla I’d be cautious about Njalla for anything semi-important. They have a bad reputation for hosting a lot of phishing and malware domains, which may lower the reputation of any domains/sites you have there.

@chort That's not how it works, we are a big provider of domains and have done this for 7 years, of course any (esp if you are a big) provider of domains will end up getting malicious domains but that's also something we are very good dealing with and have got credit for it as well. They don't flag all domains under a provider as being malicious, that would just be insane...@snaggen @liebach @h3artbl33d

@njalla I worked on internal detection & response teams and we absolutely do weight bad registrars/hosts higher on our alerting systems. The last company I worked at tracked a prolific phishing actor who primarily used your service, and a couple others that accepted bitcoin. In fact, you seem to make it a huge selling point that it's difficult to attribute who's using your service (see attached image). We fundamentally disagree on philosophy of content policing, but to say security teams don't weight the reputation of the provider is wrong. We absolutely do.
