@philcolbourn surface tension of liquid solder! Amazing when you think about it.

@stike how do they avoid shorts! seems like it's a one-shot process - no way to redo.and no way to inspect for quality?

@philcolbourn just watch louis rossman fix motherboards, tiny surface components and most of the time everything just snaps into place as long as the hot air doesn’t blow it away

@philcolbourn @stike x-ray is used for inspection or sometimes defects can be spotted with a microscope. There are several ways to replace them. However most it would require special equipment. The easiest for a hobbiest would be to bake a new one on with some paste flux.

@Cheese @philcolbourn Yes, they suck because there is a huge blob in the center that is used often to cool down the logic inside. The heat is dumped into the support PCB.If you reflux one, you want to press on it then remove the excess solder to avoid shorts. It is really a two phase high/low surface tension liquid composed of solder and flux that allow to do this electrical connexions. You can check Louis Rossmann's video on youtube. He is very didactic and has video setups that help see
