Earlier this month, unknown attackers targeted our website servers by spamming requests in an attempt to overload the servers and prevent users from accessing out website. We provided detailed information on what was happening and how we responded to it.https://grapheneos.social/@GrapheneOS/109834067235794272#grapheneos #ddos

We made it clear we don't know the specific group behind that specific DDoS attack. In response to https://twitter.com/kitfunfel/status/1623632234971545600, we explained it's not a sophisticated attack and very likely originates from groups who openly engage in other forms of underhanded attacks on GrapheneOS.

A group selling highly problematic proprietary phones and chat services which they claim to be secure has tried to use this short 2 minute DDoS incident to attack the project with blatant spin and fabrications:https://medium.com/@Geoff_Green/multiple-ddos-attacks-at-grapheneos-whats-going-on-behind-the-scenes-67ec381f9f86This is exactly what we were talking about.

In this post, they conflate the recent DDoS attack on our website servers (only static content) with previous unrelated attacks targeting the federated Matrix chat ecosystem as a whole. They make many unsubstantiated and outright false claims in an attempt to harm GrapheneOS.

They try to portray the fact that GrapheneOS is an open source project funded by a substantial amount of donations rather than a business model as a negative, and try to imply that creates 'security deficits'. This is typical behavior from a typical security industry charlatan.

Conflating the 2 minute DDoS attack on our website this month with overall Matrix ecosystem DDoS attacks last year and news about Cloudflare and OVH doesn't make much sense. They try to portray the DDoS attacks and our transparency about them as somehow eroding our reputation.

Article finishes up with baseless, unsubstantiated claims that we made false accusations about the source of the DDoS. You can see our thread and replies where we talked about why the attacks are unsurprising and gave examples of other ongoing underhanded attacks on our project.

The post comes from the CEO of https://myntex.com, a company selling problematic proprietary phones and messaging services (https://chatmailsecure.com). You can see why a company like this would feel threatened by open source projects like GrapheneOS, Signal, Matrix and others.

Can the recent DDoS attack lowered our website's 30 day uptime to a bit above 99.99%: https://nodeping.com/reports/statusevents/3FL97F6RRQHJIOWLOur website servers don't provide any services to GrapheneOS so hardly anyone noticed. If their goal is harming our reputation with downtime, they'll need to do better.

If you check out the websites from the group attacking us for being targeted by these DDoS attacks, you'll see their advertising has a major focus on their supposed 99.99% uptime and DDoS protection. We're not surprised by more underhanded attacks by charlatans as it's endless.

@shipp They also try to conflate DDoS attacks with exploitation of servers. Not using a DDoS protection service like Cloudflare as a reverse proxy in front of our servers for privacy reasons doesn't make them any more vulnerable to exploitation and in fact reduces attack surface. They conflate spam / DDoS attacks on the federated Matrix ecosystem as a whole with the recent 2 minute DDoS attack on our website. They make unsubstantiated, baseless claims of 'security deficits' as part of this.

@shipp It's quite bad. It takes a few careful reads of their post to see how manipulative and inaccurate it is. It's hard to notice all the nonsense in a single read through. We previously didn't have any particular hints about which hostile group was behind attacks. Now we know of an extremely hostile company selling sketchy insecure phones with BlackBerry chat server / PGP based messaging, which focuses on uptime and DDoS protection in their marketing which is very strange to see.

@shipp See https://twitter.com/MyntexInc/status/1626688081985261588 for their announcement of their new product launching alongside their misinformation campaign against GrapheneOS. It's an end-of-life Pixel 3a XL sold for exorbitant prices to get their phone 'secure' OS and 'secure' messaging system. This is the only the latest group of charlatans attacking GrapheneOS because it threatens their revenue. We already deal with a lot of it and aren't looking forward to even more of these attacks. We're prepared for it though.

@GrapheneOS Personally I just found out about this Myntex company or aforementioned medium post from... this. Perhaps goading your org to write up a counter to get even more exposure had been their primary objective all along? 😅

@GrapheneOS What I really like about #GrapheneOS is that they are 100% open as to what they do, why the measures they take increase security or privacy and most importantly that they explain the technical limits. No false promises. This makes me trust the project.

@GrapheneOS Only this month #Exclu, another charlatan vendor of a supposedly secure and encrypted messaging app, was shut down by police in Europe. Those comedians sold subscriptions for 500€ for three months and 900€ for six months. How can anybody in their right mind think that closed source solutions are more secure than an open source protocol like #Axolotl which governments desperately try to circumvent. #chatcontrol #Chatkontrolle
