@ike 1) it lower latency with dns caching it's great2) you can add an exception for whatever ip your IOT devices have. i think.3) not usually4) negative effects may include the realization of how many ads exist, i haven't seen an ad in over 10 years. idk how anyone can tolerate what saturation there is now.

@ike i LOVE it so much. if you like that kind of setup, consider running a recursive resolver locally.

Anyone use Pi Hole ?https://pi-hole.net/I have a spare raspberry pi laying around and if I understand how this works, I'm essentially setting up a dns server on my home network that I can point my router to. Q's:- would this introduce latency? how much?- pi hole blocks ad serving in apps, so I would I be able to watch hulu on my tv ad free?- would this break apps that are unable to play ads?- what negative UX would non technical folks on my network have?#PiHole #raspberrypi

@ike - I've been using my Pi Hole for about a year and a half, and have not noticed any latency resulting from it.- A lot of bigger services have gotten really good at getting around ad-blocking services like DNS sink-holes, unfortunately, I've tested Hulu specifically, and it does not block ads there. It depends on the service.- It depends on the app. I haven't had any issues with it rendering any apps useless.- The only UX for Pi Hole is the admin web interface.

@brandont @ike many streaming apps actively ignore local network dns settings and phone home to a cert pinned DoH resolver.

@jeff Thx! I'm not familiar with recursive resolver, but look forward to reading about it.

@ike the tl;dr version: you are your own dns provider, with caching you are impervious low levels of dns based DPI.
