       The thing no one tells you is that you can just make up your own holidays. Nobody can stop you.And if you keep practicing it every year, it will become part of your family's microculture and become just as emotionally meaningful to you as any holiday practiced by the larger culture.

       @nickwedig Your family microculture can also eliminate traditional holidays as needed to preserve your sanity. Here, we have eliminated observance of almost all the old standbys, and instead reflect on the meanings of X-Day, Halloween, Charles Nelson Reilly's birthday, and National Pork Month. I have yet to pierce the veil between worlds and release an insatiable tide of eldritch horrors during the Halloween season... but it's about the journey, not the destination.
