https://www.ndr.de/geschichte/tagebuecher/Holocaust-Leugnung-Die-Wahrheit-hinter-den-Hitler-Tagebuechern,hitlertagebuecher114.html via @robin A fascinating new perspective on a major scandal I remember vividly from my youth in Germany - the fake Hitler diaries 40 years ago. The full content has now been released and apparently highlights a political motivation previously not appreciated, namely #HolocaustDenial.#Holocaust #Geodons

@ruthsfamilyhistory @robin I remember that very well, too: the tv news, the newspapers, the Stern cover, etc. It was all very fishy: from the wrong initials on the notebooks to the content and the fact that Hitler would never have kept a diary. And I recall well that one of supposed revelations was bizarre way it supposedly discussed the Jewish Question & Holocaust

@CitizenWald @robin I recall a sense of disbelief in my family (rightly so) when the “discovery” was first announced and of dread when the first alleged snippets of content were publicised and appeared to present “Hitler in a new light”. It was a trigger of terrible memories for survivors - not that I understood what psychological triggers were back then.

@ruthsfamilyhistory @robin Yes, no coincidence that Holocaust denier David Irving liked the "revelations." It is a shame that a few distinguished scholars allowed themselves to be taken in and inadvertently lent credibility to the whole thing

@CitizenWald @ruthsfamilyhistory I also remember there being a scandal around some Hitler diaries, but I don't remember what my parents thought of it. I also recognize the name Irving from my childhood, but I don't remember in what context. I was too young to understand everything back then.
