@elliek end to end encryption protects the contents of messages but doesn't protect intimate metadata (like profile info, who's talking to whom, etc.). WhatsApp uses end to end encryption for messages, but doesn't protect metadata. Signal protects both.

@Mer__edith which is exactly why I use it and support it. I will be sorry to lose my UK contacts. Will they be able to use it anyway if they use a VPN?

@elliek We have no plans to leave the UK. However, if we were faced with a choice between undermining privacy and leaving, we would choose to leave. You can look to our efforts to provide Signal to people in Iran when the Iranian government blocked it for an example of the efforts we've gone to ensure people have access.

@Mer__edithHypothetically speaking what would leaving any market look like? Blocking IP addresses from the affected country from accessing the service or not allowing accounts registered with phone numbers from that specific geography? Or perhaps activity on the service providers in that geography blocking access to signal?

@andy We have not crossed that bridge and I don't think speculation is useful. As in other cases, we will do whatever we can to ensure people can access Signal. But we will not compromise privacy.
