I'm always interested in words for colors, and I found this article particularly fascinating: Apparently, warm colors are easier to communicate than cool colors (based on how quickly someone can pick the correct color chip when given clues).https://theconversation.com/languages-dont-all-have-the-same-number-of-terms-for-colors-scientists-have-a-new-theory-why-84117#language #WordNerd #communication

@grammargirl As a color-blind person, Iām with the Papua New Gineans: you only need three colors. Also, the whole time I was reading the article I was thinking that the reason we have so many words for colors is probably capitalism, our need to sell a new improved blue.

@grammargirl This made me realize how much more often I talk about sunsets compared to blue skies. But the greens/blues/purples are my favorite colors to wear. Interesting!

@grammargirl And I'm never interested in colours, as I'm colour blind. (Colours also don't play a big part in my stories, for obvious reasons.)I keep enjoying the way how people go all bubbly over colours, though, so keep it coming!

@grammargirl This article led to a very long conversation with @jamesjdominguez (who has actually studied linguistics and how the words for colour develop). Thank you for sharing :D

Here's another interesting article about words for colors. I especially love the parts at the end about "impossible or forbidden colors" and made-up colors in fiction. https://blog.wordnik.com/the-language-of-colors#language #WordNerd

@grammargirl I live in Germany these days and it never ceases to amaze me that I am the only person here who sees the eggs that a popular type of hen lays as being a light, powdery blue. All of the locals see them as green. One of these days I'll grab a spectrophotometer and measure the wavelength and settle the debate! Because at least there are standards for which wavelengths of light correspond to which colors.
