Look, if Meta and Twitter are moving towards subscription models, this isn't a game they can win.The Fediverse will eat their lunch. For the same amount of money that Twitter Blue and Meta Search is charging, not only do I get all the features that both those subscription plans are offering, I get ZERO ads. That's right ZERO ads!And not only that, I can whitelist or blacklist any Fediverse community server.I can edit CSS. I have true freedom over my data.https://www.vox.com/recode/2023/2/21/23609375/meta-verified-twitter-blue-checkmark-badge-instagram-facebook

Truthfully, Musk and Zuckerberg are being architects of their own doom. You can offer free advertising-subsidized services.Or you can offer ad-free subscription services. But it's a bad idea to offer subscription services that force you to see ads. This is a case of overreach. And maybe you can get away with it if the Fediverse didn't exist. But it does.

Look, we all know that Big Social isn't becoming a better experience. It's getting worse. As I noted two days ago, the top 5 apps that Americans are actively trying to delete are social media apps:https://mastodon.social/@atomicpoet/109904057332019277Now Big Social is asking people to pay for their shitty experiences?

Previously, the reason why people avoided the Fediverse was because it was deemed "too hard".But as Meta and Twitter continue to degrade more and more, people are willing to migrate for an experience once deemed "too hard".That isn't to say that the Fediverse itself can't be better. Now the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. However, once money starts entering the conversation, that changes the dynamic completely!

@pitrouillesque 200,000 people joined Mastodon alone this week. Within a month, Mastodon will have 10 million users.Sometimes it pays to be first.
