Can anyone in a red state or red area tell me what your library is like?I am wondering if displays and collections vary by area. The libraries around me have a “gender identity” or “LGBTQ” display or flyer up in the children’s department nearly all the time; the only question is whether it’s a large display or just a flyer on a table. Also, my library system has about 4-5 times more copies of The 1619 Project than it does of the U.S. Constitution (annotated or not, combined with other documents or not).If you tell me what a red state library is like, I’ll know if this is a nationwide library problem or a “sucks to live in a blue state” problem.

@Cousin_Isobel My state is blue, but I live in a very red part of it. I know that the library has loads of gender identity books in the kids' section because a bunch of genderspecial artists who squat in an abandoned factory made a big deal out of donating a shitload of gender books.I don't know about displays though, I haven't really had a reason to go to that wing of the library. I know they did some shit for pride month in the children's wing last year that pissed a lot of people off but I don't really know the details other than that they doubled down and basically treated anyone who didn't like it as dumb hicks.ETA I don't know about copies of the constitution or anything like that, I'd have to check the database.

@stingray Thanks. Wow, I’ve always heard that, when I donate books, I should not expect them to be put into the collection, but to be resold to earn money for the library to buy the books it wants (apparently, gender books). If I knew I could donate a book and have it go straight onto the shelf, I would occasionally donate GC books; there aren’t many for kids, but I’d be happy just to expand the collection for adults.I feel like we need some sort of competing Pride month. The gender identity movement has been able to frame a lot of what it does as a “celebration,” and a way to honor people. I’m not sure what we could come up with to compete with that in just the right way, without it being captured, but I’d love some sort of “Reality Pride.”

@Cousin_Isobel my guess is it’s sent out in a “memo” or a “planogram” style like anything other industry marketing related.

@Cousin_Isobel Living in red rural part of a blue state. The library where I worked last year was full of gendershit. The librarian got all starry-eyed when she bragged to anyone who came in that she had a transman "grandson." That was a conservative rural area with a post-COVID influx of city people. I almost got fired for not "honoring" the new pronouns around the PARENTS of "trans" kids. These were kids who had grown up in our small community, and suddenly we all had to pretend (all the time, even when the kids weren't around) that they had always been the opposite sex. I had to attend a sexual harassment training for my sins, because apparently not validating the choices of adults to trans their kids is sexual harassment.I will check out the children's section of the library in the hamlet where I now live. I haven't wanted to look at the children's section, because I really haven't wanted to know how far down the rabbit hole they are. At least they don't have flyers bragging about what a "safe place" their "love is love" and "all are welcome here" because "we believe" library is. There aren't many books in this library at all. Mostly you have to order from the library system connected to populous areas, which has every gendershit book published, but also Helen Joyce's book. A funny story about the signs. The recent influx of city people to my old village has come with lawn signs proclaiming how "inclusive" the new owners are for creating "safe spaces" in what it seems they view as a bastion of scary white trash. One of the signs was stolen and there was a fit of gasps and speculation from the wokes on local media. The owners finally decided it was the "hikers," because these inclusive people moving into this rural area (that depends on tourism for business) hate the hikers. Goddess only knows why they moved here. I guess to look at the scenery out their picture windows. Anyway, I thought it was funny that the "we accept all" sign was stolen, and I'm sure it was by a long term resident, because these gendershit people are all about aggrandizing themselves about their goodness and inclusivity, while being the most prejudiced woke people imaginable. They hadn't a clue why their leader's sign was stolen, and the white trash had a good laugh.

@Hempressemilym Oh! I had to look up what “planogram” means, but I see now. From how far away would a small (or medium) town’s library’s planogram be sent out? From the county (since libraries across a county generally have borrowing agreements and work together) or from a national body such as the American Library Association (which is very captured)?

@Cousin_Isobel national, county then individual- would be my guess. The barrier to entry to be an actual librarian (masters degree) they probably have been browbeat and slowly but suddenly groomed into not noticing these things. There was a pro pink hat book at the book fair, I asked why - they said “it came in the bundle” well we’re not putting it out - or at least I’m revoking my 30 hours of volunteer time to run it. They sat in the box and got sent back - not one copy sold.

@hearthmoon Wow!You know, I initially thought that people leaving blue areas for red ones wanted and appreciate much of what being “red” meant – at least, the relaxed Covid policies and lack of “woke.” I keep hearing from people saying it’s not true; they just want to have their cake and eat it, too.As someone in a blue area, it makes me feel slightly less bad, because I thought we were losing potential anti-elite progressive warriors, but by the sound of it, I should wish them good riddance. I am sorry that you have to deal with them, though! Also sorry that you almost got fired for not going along with insanity. Geez, yes, that is a pretty nutty standard for “sexual harassment.” It seems that everything that was ever supposed to be good is being twisted and used against us.

@Cousin_Isobel In my very blue city amidst a sea of red in the rest of the state, 96 copies of the 1619 project, 15 copies of the US Constitution and Bill of Rights with another 37 copies of same available through ILL, and 187 copies of 98 books (most annotated)about the US Constitution that include the full text of both Constitution and Bill of Rights (does not include law texts about constitutional law). So, more than adequate access to both in my local library system.

@Cousin_Isobel only book adverts / focus are for black history month. Nothing in the kids area as far as posters or propaganda, walls modestly decorated with generic child appropriate art (animals) - one column of black authors and one column of books about black people. No “identity” anything or “spotlight on” sections / posters. Snagged 2 books from the buy shelf.Might be time to ask your librarian what the heck.

@Hempressemilym This is good to hear. I do want to think of just the right way to approach the librarians, but I really can’t get it wrong because my family and I rely on the library very heavily and I don’t want to be embarrassed by my choice of words.I think the least I can ask for is balance. Why aren’t books stocked from the opposing position, and why don’t displays include the opposing position? I think this might go over a bit better, knowing the knee-jerk opposition every librarian has to “censorship” that isn’t even really censorship, but just keeping certain things away from kids.

@Cousin_Isobel I've seen the library in a blue state, Hispanic area --- NO ADULTS allowed in the children's area without a child! Safeguarding from pervvy men, top priority. Wokeness is purely a whitetarded obsession. The rest of the world still values family and the rights of children to be protected from pervvy men.

@polarisera Oh, yes, a majority-minority area helps. I see less of the gender stuff (but not none) in the city near us that has a larger black and Hispanic population. Some of the libraries near me do have signs that say that adults can’t come in if they’re not “actively looking.” As a Mom, I often am actively looking, so it’s nice that I can go in. I don’t know if they are worried about pervs, the adults who used to just go and bring their newspapers to the childrens area because they liked the chairs (taking up room where they don’t really belong), or both.

@Cousin_Isobel I'll swing back in mine when i know the head librarian will be there (were close in age) and I will ask her, how she would best suggest to communicate concerns, the library my mom takes my nephews to in WA is wokeAF and needs a cleansing as well - its a public service, if those using the service do not need / want it, the concerns / comments should be heard from said public.
