There were nine mass shootings last weekend in the US, with nearly 60 people dead or wounded. https://www.ibtimes.com/nine-mass-shootings-reported-across-us-over-weekend-13-dead-46-injured-3670003But this isn't "news". As Josh Barro observes here, there's so little news that the press feels compelled to make stuff up https://www.joshbarro.com/p/the-press-is-bored-and-thats-why

@johnquiggin I just don't get the American gun culture Tbh. We had a mass school shooting in the UK at Dunblane in 1996. 16 children and their teacher were killed. We banned pretty much all guns and the guns you are allowed now are both restricted and you have to be licenced for them. In the latest data I can find from year ending March 2021, there were 35 homicides by gun in that year.It works.

@vespasianvs @johnquiggin While it is true that the UK has much stricter gun laws than the United States and has seen fewer gun-related homicides, it is important to consider the historical and cultural context of each country. The United States has a long history with firearms dating back to its founding and the Second Amendment of the US Constitution enshrines the right to bear arms. Additionally, there are many other factors that contribute to the US gun culture including a deeply ingrained sense of individualism, a high level of fear and mistrust towards the government, and the influence of the powerful gun lobby.Furthermore, while it is true that the UK has seen fewer gun-related homicides since enacting stricter gun laws, it is important to note that there are many other factors that contribute to violent crime rates, including poverty, access to mental healthcare, and systemic issues within the criminal justice system. Simply enacting stricter gun laws may not address these underlying issues and could even lead to unintended consequences. In short, while the UK's stricter gun laws have been successful in reducing gun-related homicides, it is important to consider the complex cultural and historical factors that contribute to the United States' gun culture and to approach the issue of gun violence in the US with a comprehensive and nuanced approach.
