I finally made it off the Bing waiting list - sadly I only have access to the much-restricted version with a 60 message a day / 6 message per conversation capI'm beginning to understand how they made the decision to ship it without catching it's darker side: it's REALLY compelling - a genuinely delightful search experience which I can't wait to spend more time with (I blew through my cap pretty quickly)The new filters are quite effective: I've not yet managed to get it to threaten me yet!

I still think shipping the original, unfiltered version (let's call that one Dark Sidney) was deeply irresponsible, and I remain unconvinced that it could remotely deliver the capabilities that are implied by it's design and first impressionsBut it's like a forbidden fountain that I just can't resist... it's SO much fun to use!Tip: if you're on macOS you can accelerate up the waiting list using the Parallels Desktop free trial to run a Windows free trial to run Edge and get faster access

@simon “The new conversational search engine from Microsoft hasn’t threatened me yet, which is an improvement from before.”Weird timeline.

@simon by the time I get in, they will have removed all the fun and I will loose my interest after 2-3 messages. I know myself 🤷🏻♂️

@simon threatening you was the thinnest, least interesting end of the wedge tbh

@simon perhaps spoofing the browser user agent string is sufficient? In safari, activate the developer menu, then there is an option.

@simon What about just using Edge on macOS? Does Bing AI require Windows for some reason?

@ramsey No idea! It was all very unclear - I tried a whole bunch of things to get off the waiting list and something seems to have worked, but maybe Windows in Parallels had nothing to do with it?

@simon Not saying to do it but you can also spoof your user agent on Firefox it seems once you've used an edge browser at least once.

@simon Do you find it useful? My worry with LLMs is that due to how they work, they're really good at producing plausible sounding bullshit and my bullshit filters are tuned for regular web search. For instance, certain language cues/style gan give me a hint that what I'm reading is produced by a dubious source, but with LLMs it's fairly easy to style the response to make it sound as if it came from someone who knows what they're talking about.

@raf still evaluating that, but it feels useful to me so far - I've not used it to solve any particularly thorny problems yetI'm looking forward to an example where it massively outperforms what I could have done using Google alone
