I haven't been paying attention – what is 2023's favorite messenger application that doesn't use my phone number for identification and is ideally usable in browsers/on the desktop, too?

@hmans #Matrix and #XMPP seem to be the consensus.I use #Signal more than either right now though. But yeah tied to phone number. They do allegedly do some privacy preservation around it.There's also this chart https://www.messenger-matrix.de/messenger-matrix-en.html

@Jdreben @hmans #Snikket (@snikket_im) has been my favorite recently if you want the whole package (clients for most platforms, run your own server, etc.) if you just want a phone app, Conversations (https://conversations.im/) is also great.
