I love that mastodon.Africa is hosted in and aimed at South Africa. What I don’t like is that it only shows reposts and accounts on it’s own en instance. Feels very insulated.

@dimi I think mastodon.africa is quite well connected for a (still) fledgling instance in the #fediverse and you should be able to subscribe to accounts from other instances, repost their posts etc. I do it all the time.You just might need to search for the full account name (e.g. "@hthiart") in the search boxUsers from other instances can also subscribe to your account that way even if it is still unknown to that instance.The more active users are here, the better it gets. 🙂 @wogan

@dimi Ok the full account name example did not go well 😬 😀 ... I wanted to say that you need to add the domain part as well... I think there is a way to quote a user name, but simply remove the space after the second @ from the example and you should get the idea: @hthiart@ newsie.social@hthiart @wogan

@hnygd @hthiart @wogan Thanks! I know it’s possible to follow accounts on other servers and I get this instance is just getting started. One example of how it feels detached from others is that if I look at an account the following and followers only show accounts on this instance. Might have to do with it taking more resources to show accounts from other instances, which is fair. Just feels less connected than accounts I have on other instances. But each serves its own purpose.

Some call it a feature, some call it a bug.The antidote seems to be: "engage engage engage", ie: comment, like, repost and follow, follow, follow.Pretty soon you'll be spending more time curating your block list than your follow list >.<(that last part was a joke. sort of.)

Was a little concerned about sharing to many things to broadly and that other folk might find it irrelevant or cluttering their own views.This was based on my ignorance of how Mastodon works. @hthiart …and maybe you want to reconsider splitting the different sources into different accounts as well. Right now you have a standard set of tags which oftentimes doesn’t fit, e.g. news that have nothing to do with South Africa are also tagged for South Africa. I think it makes searching for content via tags less useful if they are not correct.Tagging might become easier if not all news go into one huge stream.Just my 2c 🙂@falgn0n @dimi @wogan

@hnygd @hthiart @falgn0n @dimi From my side, I've actually considered registering placeholder bots and doing RSS feeds to them - something like https://social.espeweb.net/users/politico_eu_botWe could have a News24 bot, DailyMaverick bot, IOL bot, etc etc, which will give people a choice of which streams to subscribe to.

@wogan I think that would be *very useful* and maybe it would be quite easy to use the great foundation @hthiart already has built? Add tagging, split it into multiple accounts. That way it can easily be found, one can choose which news sources to subscribe to, it adds to mastodon.africa’s visibility and it extends @hthiart great work?@falgn0n @dimi

@wogan @hnygd @falgn0n @dimiYeah I think you are right Wogan.On Obsidian. Man I really like it. Have been using it for a while and it is growing in leaps and bounds. A nice community as well. Most of the stuff is free, but the publishing is a paid feature. It's a bit to expensive for me since I don't share my vault. There are a few workarounds but Perlite is easy and slick. If I wanted to publish sensitive stuff, then Obsidian publish might be better.
