I’m Loving Kernel 6.2 On Raspberry Pi OS, I Can’t Wait To Test 6.3.I love building kernels, especially when everything goes according to plan. I can’t wait to see what goodies kernel 6.3 will provide.

@agentcasey I'm a little pissed off at Armbian right now. The build system kept failing over stupid shit, so I'll try it on Debian 11 I guess 🙄

Yes I did that too awhile back. I did use Armbian on my Rock64 boxes and I have that build system installed on another system but I haven’t used it in a while so, happily, I get to avoid the those build system failures for now. Keep at it though. I’m assuming that you cloned the repository from Armbian Build System, if not you could try that and see if your builds succeed then.

@agentcasey What I meant was the build system fails on Ubuntu 22.04, I was going to start clean on Debian 11 x86 and see if I could get a newer working image for my Renegade Elite.

I found ubuntu mate run best on the pi for desktop use, and it runs really well on an N2+. Otherwise, debian. I am running Debian with plasma on my Rock 5b. It's pretty snazzy.

@Humpleupagus @agentcasey I'm talking about building the arm images on an x86 machine. You have to use Ubuntu or Debian. When I went to build on Ubuntu it was complaining about packages that I didn't have even though they were definitely installed.

Oh, I get you now. So the build system was working until the upgrade to 22.04. You could delete the whole tree for the build system and clone it again but if that doesn’t work your idea sounds good. I’m sure you’ll work it out and I should go over there and see what my build system looks like now too. Like I said I think I made one last image for my Rock64 and then I turned that box into my media center.

What's new that would benefit a pi400 from the latest Deb 11 Kernel v5 whatever?

@agentcasey @Humpleupagus I already have Debian 11 installed on my build machine, so I'll git clone the armbian build system and try again and let you know how it goes. I like Armbian because its the only system that fully supports Libre Computer board. I already have a working Armbian image on mine (kernel 5.10 and full gpu support with panfrost) but its 6 months old now and I haven't been updating lol. Time for some fresh code.

Ok thanks then I will not be touching my pi400 that has been up and running perfectly since the power went out for three days after a tornado almost two years ago.

That’s good, I’m just experimenting and taking notes as always. I have several of these devices and I like testing kernels. I practically build a new one each time the mainline changes. It’s just for my enjoyment and for informational purposes.

Nice. I wish I had another one now that I've got the pi400 maxxed with SDR stuff but I guess I was lucky at the time when I got it cause I have yet to see any pis around me for sale since. If I had another one I'd tinker again. I too used to love building kernels I have very fond memories and nightmares of building kernel mode https called TUX for some reason

Well that’s how this learning game is played now, isn’t it? We try things, we fail, we repeat the process and soon we get an inclination of how things are properly done and how they work. As you properly realized, the kernel that ships with your pi 400 is perfect for the job and works flawlessly. I still have the original kernel onboard too, just in case. I just wanted to make some new ones, especially since all the talk of adding rust to the kernel, which is happening, slowly as we speak. I took my sources from here and I watch it constantly for changes and then I go to town. I work on all sorts of projects to learn and amuse myself. Even now, I just started doing more with Lbry and I’ve started running my own Lbry wallet server, blockchain server and API server. I had to get more powerful machines for the wallet server since it needs at least 16GB of RAM to act sanely, so once I built that machine, I set it into motion and it’s underway. They’re all just working locally and I needed to explore the possibility of an API server because I noticed that on my LBRY Kodi addon, some of my channels were being blocked and weren’t being played. So I had been using the lbry-sdk kit for some experiments and I just used that knowledge to power up my own in house API server and pointed the Kodi lbry addon to that address and now it’s working flawlessly with no blocks. Then one thing led to another and I started the other two services. I’m running a Librarian instance as well along with Invidious and they’re all running locally and they’re fast.

Achhttttually. I had display issues with the vanilla out of box setup. the firmware had to be updated along with a new kernel. With the SDR dongles plugged in it did not allow enough room to plug in my HDMI adapter to the primary port and I was struggling with my physical environment where this thing had to end up being installed and tuners tuned near the antenna. I had to have a window manager to configure some sdr software. Also ran into power issues, max USB peripheral current draw especially when trying to make room using extension cords. Also have a amplifier powered by blast (from the USB 5v) that would cause no video out as well. that gave me trouble from two angles. in the end it was a learning experience indeed. https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/issues/326

Yes that will happen if one approaches the building of a Raspberry Pi kernel in that manner. However, there are documents such as this one that will have that kind of effect. I on the other hand, with the sources from the link in my previous post, will correct that trouble. It just takes some careful attention to detail, practice and direction. This kernel I’m using right now on this Raspberry Pi, is running perfectly, with built in firmware, overlays and device tree blobs intact.

I don't remember it was a while ago I bought the kit that came with everything on a trip to microcenter for something unrelated. I think buster was already on the sdcard and it wasn't even 64bit which I needed also for a java dependency in SDRTrunk software. What a ride man. . I just looked still no pi4s for sale around anywhere Now I really want another one

Well, I’m glad to see everything worked out. I usually install whatever OS I chose to from scratch so, I usually know what to expect. Since the Pi’s are so, very well supported, there really aren’t too many surprises.
