There's a perplexing ad on YouTube that opens with.... "Stop trying to run on the treadmill in order to lose weight, or I'm gonna jump in this pool!"Why should I give a shit whether or not you jump into the pool? Will your perfect abs wash away or something?Yes, I do realise that they're trying to get people to talk about the advert. But why does it have to be over a dumb nonsensical line!?

@tmfox I think I you might be on to something…I noticed an advert yesterday starting with something like “Does (beverage product) cause a rift in the space-time continuum?” and my immediate reaction was similar to yours - why bother putting something like that in?Perhaps weird, non-sensical or non-sequitur lines like this are the new technique to get people both talking about AND remembering products?

@lukito @tmfox You end up talking about it and it doesn't matter if it makes sense.I don't really care about adverts anymore and I don't watch them at all. I remember ads from my childhood and the 90s when TV was still a thing, but nothing new. I have an ad-blocker and I don't buy their shitty products anyway.

@awesomeknight @tmfox Okay… but regardless of personal preference towards them and resultant spending habits, the point being made was about a potential pattern of techniques. Ads will still be present for many, given their almost ubiquitous presence. It’s if and how this will influence your general audience, and what may occur with future discourse, that is interesting.

@lukito @awesomeknight @tmfox I’ve noticed a new trend in YouTube ads that only have certain sounds in them. They are usually very short, no spoken words and have very odd sounds/soundscapes used. I wonder if there’s some psychology that people stop what they are doing to look when they can’t here the jingle of a particular company?
