Customer's project analysis: "A 3-node cluster is not possible because of network limitations (an ethernet cable only has two ends!)"Long story short: To prove a point, I built a twisted-pair Ethernet "cable" with 3 ends. I've only gotten it to work with 10BASE-T and autonegotiation disabled though.

This is how the wires are connected: It takes e.g. the Tx differential pair of plug A, and one of the wires goes to the corresponding Rx wire of B and the other one to the corresponding Rx wire of C.I'm not even sure whether I've fully understood what's happening to make this actually work, since the signal is encoded in the difference between the now broken apart differential pairs... But it DOES work!

@newt @s3lph its reinventing a 1990s hub not a token ring, token ring mitigates collisions.

@newt @s3lph old hubs used to just repeat every port to every other port which is pretty similar to just splicing a cable to multiple ports unless i'm missing something (i could be missing something)

@Moon @newt Sounds about right. The hub would amplify/regenerate the signals so attenuation due to cable length isn't a problem. Signal propigation delay still is.

@Moon @s3lph so does Ethernet. There is collision detection.

yeah this isn't token ring, this is a single collision domain

Hubs = 1 broadcast domain, 1 collision domainLayer 2 switches = 1 broadcast domain, and a separate collision domain for each physical interfaceLayer 3 switches = 1 broadcast domain per VLAN, and a separate collision domain for each physical interface

@newt @s3lph i mean that an old style hub doesn't do it. switches are traffic-aware and do it

@feld @s3lph @newt i looked again and i may be uncharitable comparing it to just a splice. i take back my comparison because I'm too lazy to figure out what's actually going on.

it really is a 10mbit hub. they were passive, not powered.

@s3lph Definitely art. There are are some strange failure modes where the Rx pair is broken and tx still works. It looks like you have made three of them.Higher speeds probably need negotiation which is why they won't work.
