       When I was first on the fediverse in '18-'19, the fed timeline was just full of crazy entertaining shit: furries, linux weirdness (oh boy the Arch obsessives), masses of creative bots, anarchists, syndicalists, bronies, you name it, there was a counterculture tooting away.It's so fucking dull now. Every afternoon & evening as the USA wakes up it's just become a stream of links to mainstream articles and tw*tter.I mean, I realise that this was inevitable as tw*tter died, but still ...

       @botvolution I will add that one way to do that is to mute, mute and mute.Then, carefully select the people you would like to follow in your home timeline.The wonderful weirdoes are still out there: they are just drowned in the sea of mediocrity.

       @ParadeGrotesque That's all true of course, but I guess the thing I miss is that serendipity of something compeltely unexpected suddenly popping up out of the blue to excite or annoy or amaze.Curating one's feed via follows and filters is good, but it doesn't provide those marvelous WTF moments so often.

       @botvolution @ParadeGrotesque similar could be said for many a tech-based village square. What is the village without the people who pass by and make you look and you say, "I have no idea what the fuck you are doing, but you seem to be enjoying yourself and you are not harming me? So, thank you for the show and have at it!"I haven't been on the Fediverse for long, but I understand the worry over "gentrification".

       @HornedLivestock @botvolution It's not so much gentrification as dumbification, to be honest.I keep ranting at the new people (to use CW, to put descriptions with their images, to stop posting about Twitter, etc), so I guess that makes me the sad old man in the town square... 😉

       @ParadeGrotesque @botvolution I think it is an issue with the way the Fediverse is set up, but I am sure that as it grows that will be rectified by those who know. Multiple, dedicated servers, each with their own niche, means that all tastes can be catered for. The problem is that some of these are in ghettos and side streets in parts of the city that you don't know exist, and with no easy way to stroll there, so to speak. It doesn't favour idle strolling.
