Watching a news segment on programs to train new auto mechanics. They look great, but I can't help but wonder what the push to EVs will do to this job segment over time, even if the rather insane mandates being imposed are stretched out (as I strongly suspect will have to happen).

@craigmaloney I'm just concerned about enticing people into a field -- based on current vacancies -- that is bound to be contracting notably in the near future.

@lauren I'm concerned about what it means for independent auto shops. At some point every auto maker is going to move to the Tesla / John Deere model and just make it impossible for independent mechanics to work without proprietary software/code readers. Everyone to the dealership for $200/hr shop rate.

@lauren Indeed, but unfortunately that hasn't stopped folks before. I'm sure there's folks out there that were learning Windows 7 just as it was being decommissioned. There will always be a cottage industry for gas-powered vehicles. Problem is it'll always be a boutique industry. The clever will figure out which vehicles are the ones that will bring the biggest return.

@lauren I saw this news clip last year about thus topic here in Singapore. It may be somewhat related to what you're saying.https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=NI1IAeVtrjQ

@lauren I wonder if some of the troubleshooting skills will translate. I'm sure the systems are very different, but the ability to work out technical problems is still a good skill.

@lauren there’s still plenty of the rest of the mechanicals that need service or repair. (Suspension, cooling, cv joints)- Being an automotive electrician and debugging canbus and computers has been a thing for some time and will continue to grow.

@lauren It will change the job, but not the need. Lubrication is still required, and filters, and maintenance of all the stuff. (I drive a Prius. It needs a labels saying "No User-Serviceable Parts Inside" - because about all you can do without a professional mechanic is check the oil.)

@lauren Depends. I think some of the EV makers want to be the ONLY source of fixes (a la Apple). On the other hand, cars are becoming more and more expensive, so fixing them may become more important, not less. Also, are car repair skills transferable? I broke down in South Carolina near a truck repair place that fixed my Honda and the 18-wheeler and RV while we were in the waiting room. P.S. Some things in an EV just can't be fixed.

@lauren I believe this is much more about the Right to Repair movement than it is about any mandatory move to EVs. And I’m sure you’re right about the timeline being greatly extended.
