So @buercher has made an opt-in search engine at https://www.tootfinder.ch/. But, I don't see why a search engine should bother with opt-in via magic word in bio, etc, when Mastodon *already* has an option to opt-out of search engines, which *already* index toots. The problem is a lot of people won't care or know about this particular service to opt-in, despite having technically consented to indexing in general, so a lot of content will be unnecessarily missed out.

So, anyone arguing that fedi search engines should be opt-in, should be arguing with the #Mastodon devs to make this opt-out enabled by default. Search engines should simply follow these exclusions.

@buercher oh, i see, so since replying to a thread puts your reply on the page of another's post, it depends on their setting.but still, it's suitable for something like your engine which checks each users' profiles directly, and indexes raw toots, not html pages like web search engines. so you are able to honor it 100%.
