@w7voa I am feeling increasingly uncomfortable with what I'm seeing with Spoutible. A recipe for disaster and drama is leaving the definition of "harassing" is left up to a single person who is thin-skinned about criticism. Also, Spoutible enthusiasts are embracing odd contradictions: like this: "We are the new Twitter we just need more people!"

@Teri_Kanefield @w7voa Exactly right. And it is a perfect reminder that even when someone claims to be and feels they are an ally of communities they are not a part of, they will not truly understand that community's values and perspectives. That is completely expected and normal but that is also why the Mastodon approach of each instance setting its own policies is the right way to go, because communities can decide for themselves.

@Orla1 @w7voa For whatever it's worth, some of the larger Twitter accounts going to Spoutible are people I've had muted for years because they spread what I call rage inducing simplifications.I am afraid it's shaping up to be another Counter Social + echo chamber.

@Teri_Kanefield You’re probably right. After he became more well known during the midterms, it seemed that notability went to his head and blinded him from seeing that creating replacement for Twitter is not an easy task. Especially since a few established alternatives already existed.

@Orla1 His following shot up after the midterms, and I think he was looking for how to leverage his following. Before the launch he indicated that he thought Spoutible would have a million followers fairly quickly. He seemed to think he'd move his 400K followers to his new site, and then others would follow. The problem is that copycats and spinoffs are never the Next Big Thing.

@Teri_Kanefield @w7voa A recipe for disaster and drama is leaving the definition of "harassing" up to a single person who is thin-skinned about criticism.Disappointing response, Teri. You’re entitled to this opinion, clearly. But it doesn’t sound very empathetic or understanding of others. Who else but a person—whether they be woman, lgbtq, Black, autistic, disabled, Brown, or AAPI has the lived experience to say, “I’m feeling attacked & harassed”? Why should a board of (frequently white cis-gendered, privileged) people be the only ones to decide *for them* if they’re being harassed, as was the case on Twitter?

@franktaber @Teri_Kanefield @w7voa Yes, let’s put all the marginalized into a space and not interact with them, lest we never have to deal with our own biases and privileges. /sAlso, it’s not working so great, if several instances have lost admins, are breaking up, etc is any indication. But go off about how this is so perfect…for people just like you.

@just_alex @Teri_Kanefield @w7voa Interesting use of sarcasm, but that's fine, I'll engage while I have energy to.We have seen no centralized system can possibly reflect the diversity of views that exist in the world. 8 billion people = 8 billion viewpoints. Some will overlap. Many won't.Whether Mastodon instances are run by volunteers is a separate question from moderation because it is inevitable that some volunteers will give up, sometimes for petty reasons like with .au.

@franktaber @Teri_Kanefield Oh, don’t do me any favors, of depleting your precious energy. This site is filled w/complaints by marginalized groups. You don’t see them, because you choose not to. Someone created a solution for that. Instead of just saying “not my thing,” privileged people (you know who you are) are trashing it as unworkable and calling the marginalized “thin skinned.” That’s gross. Shame on you both of you. I followed Teri for years on Twitter w/No account. She’s not at all who I thought she was.

@Teri_Kanefield @Orla1 @w7voa I like this term "Rage Inducing Simplifications." We live in a complex world where sometimes to make sense of it we have to eliminate irrelevant aspects to wrap our heads around the thing we're trying to understand. In this process, we often create an oversimplification of what we are studying, and that's fine. We do this all the time in science. The problem here, that "rage inducing simplifications" so well describes, is that people will eliminate *relevant* complexities in such a way that their assertions are no longer correct or true. When this is the case, it presents a sort of false dilemma that is a fallacy, at best. At worst, it's a bad faith argument, disingenuous and intentional chicanery.I enjoy reading your articles and essays. Have you written about this "rage inducing simplification" elsewhere?

@just_alex Go look at Bouzy's reaction to Courtney Milan's suggestions. He attacked her, including bringing up her previous experiences being harassed sexually.Yes, he is thin skinned and attacked someone who is actually in a more vulnerable category than he is.One more chance: Delete and back pedal or I will block.

@just_alex He also blocked a friend of mine, a woman and professor last years, because she told him he was wrong about something to do with how Congress operates. The breakdown between Courtney Milan and Chris Bouzy happened because he cannot tolerate criticism. If that opinion bothers you, you should actually block me.

@Teri_Kanefield What…?! No! I have no idea what you’re talking about or any of Bouzy’s disagreements w/people. That’s none of my business, and I’d like to leave it that way. You’re entitled to your opinion on anything or anyone. This has nothing to do with Bouzy. This is about you saying this:“A recipe for disaster and drama is leaving the definition of "harassing" up to a single person who is thin-skinned about criticism.”Which I took as your criticizing marginalized people for seeking a space where they can block people as they see fit. Is my assessment of your words inaccurate?

@just_alex What I am saying is that you stepped into a conversation that you didn't understand. The original post was about Bouzy admitting that he has suspended 40 accounts.Bouzy admitted this as part of his fall out with Courtney Milan.Frank, who you wrongfully attacked, said this is the problem with centralized ownership of a site.Courtney was explaining that the TOS give too much discretion to Bouzy to block anyone he wants to block, and he is doing so indiscriminately.
