You will have heard a lot of anti-#trans people talking about “biological sex” lately. What they are describing is a bio-essentialist, reductionist view of biological sex (there are five components of biological sex, none of which are strictly binary- take it from someone with a Ph.D. in biology). Whenever throughout history people have used bio-essentialist arguments it has nearly always been to justify oppression. Now is no different.

@juliegrrlmost people are actually trying to engage in good faith. they recognize that we divide up by or note M/F in lots of ways throughout society. they want to accommodate trans people but assume we had good reasons for doing this. maybe not. but wanting to talk about it is normal, not being an asshole. they would also like to avoid having to learn a lot more about biology and sociology of gender, if possible. in the same way people don't want to have to pick a server to use social media.

@wjmaggos Most of the ones I’ve come across (and I’ve come across a hell of a lot) use this as a conversation ender rather than being genuinely wanting to engage. There is a portion who just don’t get it but there are an equal number who are willingly using this to justify very transphobic potions. That it’s a flawed understanding also hasn’t prevented politicians using it as the basis for legislation curtailing our rights.

@juliegrrl no one is buying your woke bullshit. what you are selling isn't biology, it is ideology. Nature is oppressive by design, it is how we get rid of the garbage. There are no gender clinics in nature.

@wjmaggos @juliegrrl No one I have encountered that use bio-essentialist arguments are doing so in good faith. If they were, then they'd listen to me patiently explaining similarly to how the OP explained the biology in one sentence. The response? They double down. Misgender me. And if I don't get the fuck out, sometimes hurl death threats at me. That's not good faith.

@wjmaggos @juliegrrl i've never saw anyone pulling out bio-essentialist arguments who are acting in good faith. I may see people saying this is how they where taught to think of sex but actually using those criteria? that has always belonged to assholes.

@wjmaggos @juliegrrl They might be polite, they might even think they're being helpful somehow, or want to be - But at best, this is a microaggression, sort of like asking someone "where are you _really_ from?" "what were you when you were born?" As if it's somehow our business to ask, or would tell us anything about who they are today. It isn't helpful, and it communicates pretty negative things to the subject.And that's in the best case scenario. More often, it's used to deny needed access.
