Is it worth $600/year for a backup home ISP connection? (For context, I am already paying TM $120/year for a basically idle 4G backup SIM…)Or should I dump the recently-acquired FiOS connection — decidedly faster + includes phone service, but more expensive? #tmobile #5g

@MikeTRose I dunno, man, $50 a month for a backup? Do you get outages that often? And isn't your mobile connection a suitable backup?

@MikeTRose no, not worth it. I have such a cube on prepaid, so I only book service when I have an outage with my cable service. „Backup on demand“.

@MikeTRose My FIOS has been rock solid reliable since installation 10+ years ago. I see no need for a backup - but then, I don't have a home security system nor do I run public servers at home.

@edbott @MikeTRose I don't have cell service (by any provider where I live), I pay like $150 for my main (p2p wifi) and something similar for Starlink as a backup. So $600/year seems pretty cheap ;)

@edbott @MikeTRose I am also paying for internet at two other houses that I only occupy 50% of the year. So I prefer not to think about how much I'm paying in total for internet these days 😂😭

@clint @MikeTRose There's "off the grid," and then there's GRID? WHAT GRID?

@clint @edbott this is good perspective ;)In 2020/21 my Optimum service was quite shite, and though it was much more solid in 2022 there are times when my spouse needs to run Zoom public events from home, so fast failover is helpful. I do have a MiFi and a tetherable phone so probably I should relax a bit, at least until I start running my own Fediverse server at home 🤓

@MikeTRose You know what choice I made - but then again, I might have chose differently had I FiOS instead of Optimum!Given how much faster TM is than my Optimum, I sometimes ask myself which system is the backup.
