Linux community: Gnome is not for beginnersAlso Linux community: Ubuntu is the most beginner friendly distroWhere's the logic here? I agree with Gnome not being intuitive to new Linux users but Ubuntu also uses Gnome (most newcomers don't know about the flavors), which looks completely different than Windows or even MacOS (left panel...). Why not recommend Linux Mint or Zorin OS to WIndows users and ElementaryOS to Mac users?Ubuntu scares away some people from Linux

@fosserytechI generally recommend Mint for beginners because of this.

@fosserytech Nothing seemed to work at all. My gpu would only barely run at like 30fps on the desktop, installing the drivers did not work at first, i busted my system twice trying to do it. On Ubuntu ... no such problems. Not that i didn't eventually ALSO bust my system in ubuntu 😆 , but i don't know, it seemed a way smoother experience all told. Nowadays i run Neon, pretty happy with it.

@catraxx interesting. Maybe it's a weird hardware compatibility issue. Never heard anyone experiencing this.

@fosserytech I think i would approach it completely different these days. And to be fair, i made the same mistake a lot of people do: I build a system of hardware entirely focused on windows and then switched to linux expecting everything to just work right away. These days, i buy hardware when i see it works in Linux. And would you believe it? It works a lot better now!

@catraxx yeah not all machines are equally Linux compatible. Lenovo ThinkPads are the best as far as I know. HP is kinda ok too (Arch based distros and KDE Plasma desktop are kinda problematic on my HP machine and Linux Lite, EndeavourOS doesn't work at all but most Ubuntu based distros and Fedora work well)

@fosserytech I try to avoid laptops when i can. I am running a dell with Kubtuntu, though. It runs surprisingly well. It's an uh, lemme check.... Latitude 5501. Never been a fan of Dell, but it's not a bad machine. Employer send it, because "Omg video calls" or something 😆

@muznyo the vanilla Gnome and Ubuntu's modified version isn't really intuitive for Windows users but Zorin OS did a pretty great job to make it Windows-like. For Mac users it's decent if panel isn't at left

@muznyo didn't tried it. I heard it has pretty neat features but it's in pretty early stage. Will see what direction it goes

@jacksonchen666 most people I know try Ubuntu first because they were told that Ubuntu is the most beginner friendly distro, then they are disappointed

@fosserytech @jacksonchen666 I think once upon a time it may have been true. These days I usually recommend Linux Mint for beginners.

@PublicLewdness @jacksonchen666 me too. Ubuntu is rather a server or enterprise distro nowadays. They don't care much about average users

@jacksonchen666 most users find desktop layout weird after using Windows. Same with most other Gnome distros
