Not going to comment on #JimmyCarter because it is not seemly to criticize the dying or recently deceased.Instead, I offer you this for thought:When running for president he made a very unfortunate comment endorsing the desire of ppl to preserve the "ethnic purity" of their neighborhoodsHe was forced to explain/apologize. The nation moved on. Now the liberal left worships this conservativeCompare that with today's culture. What to think?https://www.nytimes.com/1976/04/09/archives/carter-issues-an-apology-on-ethnic-purity-phrase-but-he-says-he.htmlhttp://todayinclh.com/?event=ethnic-purity-candidate-jimmy-carter-puts-foot-in-mouth-on-housing

@CitizenWald which aspect are you talking about? “The left” appreciates that President Carter doesn’t just talk the talk, he walks the walk.

@CitizenWald Interesting but not surprising considering he was raised in the deep south. At the time he was hailed as representing the "new south." People need to be judged not just where they are at during any given time of their life but also judged by the direction they are moving.

@CitizenWald I think his popularity with progressives has a lot to do with the way he has seemed to learn and grow post-presidency—on race, gender, sexuality, and other issues.Frankly, he’s the kind of Christian conservative we need more of. I’m still going to disagree with him a lot of the time, but I’d rather have people like him on the other side of the aisle than... y’know.

@cottonmanifesto What I meant about the comparison is that he said something unfortunate or that he phrased in a very unfortunate manner but it did not ultimately impede his campaign and career. Today, by contrast, a single remark such as that would prove politically fatal.

@tkinias Right, I was trying to call attention to the fact that a politician today likely could not survive that sort of "mistake"
