Biden is 100% wrong to ally with people like Ted Cruz in an attempt to decimate Section 230 at the Supreme Court in a couple of days. They could utterly destroy UGC -- User Generated Content. And notably people like Biden and people like Cruz want exactly OPPOSITE "solutions" -- Biden wants more content pulled down quicker, Cruz wants more content left up. The likely result is a train wreck if the Court actually tries to make changes to the law.

@lauren there needs to be accountability, literally every other facet of communication has guardrails but not social media.

@qualityhammer That's very easy to say. Both parties keep saying it. But they want 180 degree OPPOSITE solutions. Doesn't work. Which means that the firms would need to drastically cut back on all forms of UGC, basically cutting users off from what they've become used to having in their everyday lives. The firms cannot possibly moderate content at current scales as being demanded -- or anything like them. Impossible. Wishing doesn't make things true.

@lauren Cruz is dumb if he thinks that a Supreme Court decision would help his view. The question before the Supreme Court is whether or not companies are liable for content it publishes. If the Supreme Court says it is, this will lead to more self regulation by the companies, not less.

@david1 Like I said, the most likely outcome if the Court intercedes is a drastic reduction in UGC availability. Perhaps also the decimation of suggestion engines, that would render most platforms unnavigable by most users, and drastically less useful. There's also the possibility that the Court will to some degree punt this back to Congress, but that doesn't necessarily change the dynamics in any meaningful way.

@lauren I would disagree on the decimation of suggestion engines. Suggestion engines would still be protected by the first amendment. As an example Fox News isn’t protected by section 230, but it can get away with saying a lot of untruthful things because of the first amendment. Same thing with the Google search engine.

@david1 A key component of these complaints is focused on making the platforms responsible for any material that they suggest algorithmically -- part of the Left's and Right's Algorithm Hate. At scale, this is impossible, meaning the demise of suggestions -- and a total morass of content as it was before the rise of Search.

@lauren Sadly this is one of those topics Biden doesn’t comprehend well enough to understand the potential damage it will cause. Any website that hosts content posted by others will be at risk. All this is another act of revenge at something that they perceive as anti-conservative. They lack the self-awareness to understand is was the BS they posted on sites that got them banned.

@lauren True. It’s age more than party that results in a lack of knowledge about how the Internet functions.

@lauren doing nothing is not an option. There are plenty of avenues to pursue in this arena that would make a difference. If it takes a threat of the nuclear option to get people moving, so be it. It's amazing how people find ways to conquer the impossible when it becomes an immediate roadblock to their success.

@qualityhammer OK, let's hear some of your proposed practical "avenues" that would not be immediately condemned by either the Right or the Left. I'm listening.

@lauren I'm definately going to respond to this just working late this week. It's an interesting topic and I think there are established processes for non web/social media that can be successfully adapted. There already are some that have been, like intellectual property protections.
