I think what's happening now is that we're seeing the *real* Musk. For his other ventures, it seems like there have been "handlers" around him who kept him from doing random stuff without thinking things through first. Now that he's basically winging it himself with Twitter, we're seeing his unfiltered behavior and poorly thought out ideas implemented and then often reversed when they go quickly sour.

@lauren It’s not like his companies haven’t fired him before though. I just think he knows little enough about cars and rockets that he stays out of the way. He thinks he’s a real-ass software engineer when he’s anything but. And many many more people know way way more about building platforms like twitter than building cars and rockets so his idiocy is easily exposed. It’s why the “car” side of a Tesla is pretty great but the software side is VERY hit or miss.

@lauren Also he's been working in areas where the deployment pipelines are long and physical, so there's a chance to mitigate his meddling, whereas twitter had built a rapid deployment model (with fractional experiments, and measurements which he seems to have destroyed)

@lauren As a former marketer I was quite surprised he killed Twitter's communications team because I'd argue that Tesla & SpaceX's comms are who built his personal mythology and brand. Many of the crises he's caused in the past 3 months were communications related. For example, Twitter's relationship to 3rd party apps and the API has been rocky for years, but better communication could have smoothed out some kinks and even made him seem innovative and entrepreneurial as he pushed for changes.

@lauren His stunt with forcing his tweets on everyone betrays a person deeply concerned about what others think about him. When he hears disapproval, he changes course. Not because he thinks that's a better course, but just to avoid making anyone not like him.

@lauren Dude hired PR to look like a genius, drank his own Kool aid, then FIRED PR because he thought he could handle it alone. Hubris, much.

@lauren We have renally two good things from it...The "what happens if a vain plutocrat buys your company" is now a threat model everywhere, so people are thinking of ways to mitigate it. The other is, now we know for a fact that money can't buy confidence.

@lauren Wait how do you write italics on mastodon? Is it a markdown thing?

@nonlinear Actually you don't. Standard Mastodon doesn't support character attributes. But some clients have chosen to interpret common text emphasis tokens like *word* in various ways, not necessarily consistent with each other. At one point, I was using three asterisks surrounding titles. But then I found out that one (relatively obscure) client used that for an nightmarish "vibrating text". So I switched to four, which seems safe to this point anyway.

@lauren I see. Core mastodon doesn't read markdown, but clients can. It's just that it's a wild west down there. And you just found what works on most. That sounds like a win to me.

@nonlinear I use a standard browser accessing the standard server (and it's my private server so I control it) and I never see any markdown.

@lauren By all reports, this is literally and exactly what is happening. Both Tesla and SpaceX have teams whose whole job description is to isolate Musk from the people doing the actual work and act as a buffer from him fucking things up.

@lauren I think we are starting to see Twitter figure out how to handle Elon (ie tell him he’s special and figure out how not to do the dumb thing he asks for).Like recently there was this thing where he was upset about the how few views his tweets got - the first set of engineers who told him the truth and suffered, the second told him he was a special boy and survived

@lauren with Tesla & SoaceX, the goal is to build a thing for tens of thousands or tens of millions that other people want to pay for, he sort of knew how to manage that. With Twitter, the goal is people’s attention - just make people pay attention. And he had a bag of tricks and they’re no longer working and he’s flailing. He made a purchase that’s hilariously bad, and he’s scrambling for a way to pay for it, but Twitter profits won’t even pay the interest on the loans he took out. It’s a mess.

@lauren @cstross We've seen a fair bit of unfiltered Musk with Tesla however. They dropped LIDAR from all collision avoidance and navigating (probably why they still run into firetrucks), 'self driving' is a dangerous by design product, yoke steering wheels, and look at everything about the Cybertruck.Same with Space-X, throwing the money they've made at that stupid "lets colonize Mars" Starship design.

@ncweaver @cstross Yes, yes, and yes. And I'll add, it's difficult to think of a better definition of Hell than being trapped on Mars under a Musk dictatorship. Even as his ridiculous fantasy it's chilling.

@lauren we’re seeing a new corollary of Poe’s Law for enshittification: “It is impossible to parody a monetization strategy in such a way that someone won’t actually believe is a good business strategy” or “You can’t tell if a Twitter headline is from The Onion or Businessweek”I hate to call this “Musk’s Law”

@lauren I've seen descriptions from an insider at SpaceX saying how they have people to distract him and stop him screwing things up.
