The surprising thing would not be a Nexus 5X not having been used in over three months, the surprising thing would be there being any functional Nexus 5Xs left on the planet

@emag The 5X had the "minor" problem that the SoC would gradually desolder itself from the motherboard

For anyone who was lucky enough to miss this: the 5X had a reasonably hot running SoC, and a case that was entirely plastic with the exception of the mount for the fingerprint reader. It turned out that this was not really enough to dissipate the heat, and the thermal slowdown wasn't sufficient, so the SoC would tend to gradually melt itself off the board, manifesting itself as a phone that would start booting and then crash once it got warm enough (usually partway through boot)

Sticking it in the freezer for a while would potentially let it boot far enough to let you back it up and then RMA it. Or you could heat it up enough that it would reflow (please don't do this in your oven, unless you want an oven full of toxic shit). Or if you could unlock the bootloader, you could reflash it with a kernel that didn't enable the performance cores and so wouldn't get hot enough to fall over.

Google used to have a tradition of giving every employee a holiday gift. One year they gave everyone a Nexus 5X. Most Google employees who wanted an Android phone already had one, so a bunch got regifted to family. And then they almost all died, and everyone hated Google, and Google adopted a new tradition of giving money to charity on behalf of employees instead.

In some sense this wasn't /technically/ a Google problem - the Nexus phones were largely designed by third parties to Google specs, and the 5X was derived from the LG G4 which had exactly the same issue

@puck "Best" strategy was to leave in the freezer for a while, boot, start the backup, and then stick it back in the freezer. Next level was trying to reflow it, but that risked destroying the hardware (and definitely ensured you weren't getting a warranty replacement)

@mjg59 I recall a tip at the time was using a hair dryer on the back of the case as a temporary fix. Didn't work for us. It was sent to a friend of my ex's who supposedly had data recovery gear. I don't think she ever heard anything back about it.Now, all my and my kids' phones are setup to copy their media files to my personal Seafile server.

@mjg59 man this reminds me that I have a nexus 6pnin a similar boat, I heard that I can get it to boot by cracking open the phone and overheating the CPU so the big more powerful one turns off and then it will successfully boot? Maybe I should try the freezer thing...

@mjg59 maybe less known, but the Nexus 6P does exactly the same. I still have one in my drawer that I try to start up every once in a while, and then sometimes it works for 15 minutes and then it’s dead again. Unfortunately, it seems I’m way past the point of custom kernels helping anything.
