"you don't have to understand how cars work to use them" is where we went wrong tbhthis wasn't an issue - and isn't an issue - with manual carsif you can drive a manual you HAVE to understand the basics, and you'll have more fun driving it anyway

am I being a 30yo boomer again? yes. it's just very frustrating when the solution to two problems - "cars are so simple to use that they discourage responsible behavior" and "driving is so boring I hate it" is the same: drive a manual like a sane person

@melanie when it chugs, shift down; when it hits redline, shift up. disengage the drivetrain fast, but ease it in real slow. and don't forget to shift with PASSION

@izaya Automatic gearboxes are somewhat new in france, they were pretty much inexistant 10 years ago, they're now very common and it seems a lot of people are very happy with that.If I were to drive cars I'd much rather drive a manual but I can understand why people prefer them over manual if they consider (and most do) cars to be purely utilitarian tools to get from one point in space to another with the least amount of hassle.

@nihl a slightly shallower learning curve at the expense of a much less enjoyable experience and less understanding of what's going on is a shitty trade tbqh

@michcia what sorta vehicles do you normally drive? I think how much fun it is is proportionate to how small the engine/vehicle is, because you have to manage it more actively

@nihl Manuals are fine provided you're not doing stop-start city driving. It's a real pain in the ass if you have to stop at intersections every 3 minutes in a manual, especially if you've stopped on a slope.Meanwhile you don't even have to think about down and up shifting in an automatic - you just brake and accelerate.

@izaya And then there's me, who gets nervous controlling a two ton metal box going so fast that it's actually easy to accidentally fuck up and it's not good.Like thankfully I have yet to cause damage and I haven't driven a whole lot but still.Maybe if more people were a little more nervous about driving they'd take it more seriously.
