This announcement that Jimmy Carter has gone into hospice has me very sad.The first campaign I volunteered on was phone banking for Carter in Missouri (I'm originally from St. Louis).November, 1980: I sat in a college dorm room and cried as the map turned red.

@Teri_Kanefield I played in my high school band for an event for Governor Carter during his presidential campaign in 1975. He always seemed genuinely kind.

@Teri_Kanefield I so feel this. Jimmy Carter is a one-of-a-kind national treasure that so few people saw in the moment, only (long) after he left office.

@Teri_Kanefield He was the first president I ever voted for, I turned 18 as he ran for his second term. I've never once thought I voted for the wrong person. He is truly the best of us.

@Teri_Kanefield The best thing I ever heard said about him was he’s the only person to ever use the office of the President as a stepping stone to do greater things.

@Teri_Kanefield I’ve always believed Jimmy Carter was a seriously underappreciated president. Politics can be terribly cruel.

@Teri_Kanefield My first vote was in 1976. I've never missed one since. And I guess I had beginner's luck. in '76, 'cause the next 3 cycles did not meet with my approval.

@Teri_Kanefield We sure did. I couldn’t understand how the so-called “moral majority” could be so hateful at the same time they rejected such an honorable, decent person. I always joke that I left the church in 1980 when they decided that God was a Republican.

@Teri_Kanefield President Carter was compelled to sell his family farm to avoid a conflict of interest, where TFG compelled the Secret Service to stay at his own propertys, getting maximum dollars for it.

@Teri_Kanefield #presidentcarter is, and will remain, a #NationalTreasure. He was dealt a tough hand in office, and in 2016 I got to see him speak at a book signing. While the effects of age were clearly visible then, his fortitude for the telling the truth, humility and integrity were stronger than ever. This news saddened me a lot.

@Teri_Kanefield I was a child in a Republican household where President Carter was not exactly loved. As a progressive adult (there is hope for children raised by Rs) it pains me how this country tosses away truly good people from leadership.

@Teri_Kanefield, He is a hero. It’s hard to be in politics in this country if you are a good, authentic person. He is one. Biden & Obama are too.President Carter spoke for national health insurance & had solar panels installed on the WH (which Reagan removed). Imagine where we might be now if he had a 2nd term. Someone elsewhere suggested that everyone who is able contribute time or money to Habitat for Humanity in his honor. So I made a donation today.

@Teri_Kanefield Me, too. In my mind, Reagan's election marked the beginning of the time when a naked appeal to greed entered the Overton window. I also remember Carter wanting to outlast the Guinea worm. It doesn't seem likely now, but it was a noble goal of a good man.

@Teri_Kanefield I can relate, he was the first president I could vote for, freshly 18, I admired him so much. I was devastated at Reagan's win and his aftereffects. I feel sad saying bye to the most decent leader of my life so so far.

@Teri_KanefieldSad that we used to mock Jimmy Carter for his simple faith, now that the USA RW has so weaponised religion in the service of their hatreds. Unlike them, he walked the talk.

@Teri_Kanefield I'm not from Missouri, and I never volunteered on his campaign, and yet, I feel a deep and abiding sadness, as if something good is leaving us, bereft in this dark and sad place. He is a good man, a great man.

@Teri_Kanefield So relate to this. Like you, my first experience volunteering on a campaign was for Jimmy Carter - it was his '76 presidential campaign and I was in high school. In 1980 someone came to my dorm room to say that Reagan won before I'd even gone down to watch the returns. It was absolutely heartbreaking.
