Here's how Musk could have dealt with SMS 2FA costs on #Twitter without putting current users at risk:1) Announce that starting on such-and-such a date (at least 30 days in the future, let's say) new Twitter accounts cannot use SMS 2FA. This will result in fewer and fewer accounts using SMS 2FA over time by attrition. This change would NOT affect existing accounts already depending on SMS 2FA.and ...2) Announce that as an incentive if you switch from SMS 2FA to a different SMS system (auth codes, security key) you will receive a year of Twitter Blue at no charge. Once you switch off SMS 2FA you can't turn it back on. - - -Instead, he will just turn off all 2FA for anyone currently using SMS 2FA who is unable to switch to a different method, who doesn't understand the issues, etc.Obviously truly caring about his users is not among his limited actual abilities.

@lauren Considering that they're having a hard time keeping the lights on, he probably needs to cut that expense immediately. And, of course, because he's an idiot.

@lauren @chancerydaily And it isn't like the cost is that high (the claims that this is costing Twitter $60M/month are lunacy). Twilio starts at $.0079/message, and it rapidly decreases as you send more. But even 1B SMS/month at that price is just $7.5M, not the claimed $60M. And by the time you hit 1B messages, the next 1B cost $500K...

Additional notes: You would not be permitted to switch back to SMS 2FA if you already are on an alternative method, just to try switch again! There also needs to be an incentive for people *already* using alternative methods. Details open for discussion.

@lauren The year of blue is probably too rich an incentive for per-user SMS savings. A month probably works, 60 days if you set up a CC with auto-renewal. Then you can subsidize savings with some paid subs.

@karabaic Yeah, I was just thinking that a year was pushing it. But you want to give people time to figure it out. Can we compromise at 90 days free with auto-renewal?

@lauren Elon can’t afford to give Twitter Blue away. Twitter’s interest service is simply too high for free Twitter Blue.

@lauren I’ll run the numbers & get back to you. 😆Honestly, you’re probably right that 60-90 days works better because you’re balancing folks forgetting about it and being able to charge them vs the cc not working. You probably need to validate it every month.B2C and SMB accounts receivable / churn analysis sucks

@lauren How much of Elon’s installed base has already migrated to iOS 16?A sugar-coated migration of every iOS 16 Twitter user to Apple’s Passkeys would be the best solution. Lather, rinse, & repeat for Android users.

@russes While I have a very advanced mobile phone, I don't have it with me all the time, and I don't have it on all the time. At my desktop, I do have a Linux-based auth app, but it's kinda a pain.

@lauren Musk is completely ill-suited to be Twitter CEO. He’s used to running companies with first mover advantage. He doesn’t really understand how to build a business that has stiff competition and how to entice consumers to his product (we’ll see how Tesla does in the next year or so with increasing EV competition).

@lauren but if he gave us Twitter Blue then we wouldn’t have to change because Twitter Blue will still allow you to do 2FA on SMS.
