Why do I always thing press pot #coffee is going to be amazing but then it turns out silty and I wish I had mad pour-over? There's something about a press pot that looks like beautiful ritual, but the results usually disappoint. Or am I doing something wrong?

@shacker some things to check:How fine are you grinding? You want the chunkiest possible grind. Are you pouring out the entire pot into a second vessel in one go before serving? If it sits on the grounds for more than a few minutes it can get bitter, and if you're making repeated pours out of the press pot it's going to stir up the sediment when it sloshes back and forth, and get nastier each time.

@shacker Your French press coffee shouldn't be silly. I suppose that you need to make certain that the press is properly assembled. We use a French press because it's convenient. I think amazing coffee requires amazing coffee beans.

@theleavingyear I use standard "ground for drip" in the press pot - should I be using a different grind? The same coffee tastes much better when I brew it dripped than in the press pot. The press pot doesn't require assembly - it's a Bodun.

@kentbrew I think you're probably right about the grind - I use standard "ground for drip" and didn't realize I needed a chunkier grind - that makes sense when you think about it. And that's an interesting tip about moving it to a second vessel - I had not heard that before!

@shacker I use standard ground too. I would use the method that works best. For me, the press is convenient but I drink no more than a cup a day.

@shacker I agree, a less finer grind should clear up the problem. Clean up for the French Press always bothered me. I currently make a double shot of espresso and add hot water for my morning coffee.

@princecaspian I realize now that the problem is pre-ground from the grocery store, which doesn’t allow for a choice of grinds. To get coarse, you have to grind it yourself.

@shacker getting it all out on one pour really helps. Right then, before I do anything else, is when I clean the screen.

@shacker thanks! I need to write up my Highly Opinionated How To Make A Decent Cup Of Coffee piece. (Spoiler alert: there are coffee trees and cherries involved and it takes YEARS....) #coffee
