       It's depressing -- but not at all surprising -- how many people here appear to have absolutely no empathy whatsoever for anyone less technical than themselves.

       @lauren For an outsider, it actually is kind of surprising how contemptuous people on the inside seem to be. 🫤

       @lauren There's a different variant of it, which I'm not sure whether you're including: lack of empathy towards people who are not curious about technical things.

       @robryk I'd consider that a subset.

       @robryk Keep in mind, many people who have no interest in this stuff have been forced to deal with it because alternatives (phone support, etc.) have been decimated by cost-cutting firms. So many people use these systems to the minimum required to get through their lives, and they hate being forced to do this.

       @lauren I saw one yesterday: "You'd have to be a moron to <make this tech choice>..."It would be far more helpful to understand that not everybody knows why it's a bad choice, and teach us.As usual, there's an xkcd comic that addresses this.https://xkcd.com/1053/

       @lauren I have a theory that the vast majority of people on Mastodon are much more socioeconomically wealthy than the vast majority on birdsite.

       @mikemol I have no actual statistics to support that conclusion, however, on its face it does not seem unreasonable.

       @lauren a side effect of the nature of the fediverse is that any model I can think of for testing this would have a strong sampling bias.This may also be a side effect of my being neither a professional statistician nor sociologist.

       @lauren Maybe that lack of empathy is much broader. Apparently less technical people haven't much empathy for technical people either. :) But really, no pun intended. It just seem, that a general understanding or will to develop to where we aren't ourselves feeling at home already is sthg. rather hard to find.

       @jayrope Nontechnical people have a much more valid basis -- they often feel like this tech has been stuffed down their throats and that when they ask for help they're ignored or ridiculed.

       @lauren Some have much more of this, others have much more of that. A conclusion will not come along, when i stigmatize others, but when i offer what i have in exchange for what they have. Always works with me.

       @lauren I guess we are all experts in some fields and non-experts in others.Every time something odd happens to my PC and I start tearing my hair out or I see toxic behaviour by experts towards newbies, I am reminded to be gentle with people not familiar with my line of work.Seeing positive behaviour is incredibly powerful too. One is inspired to do better.

       @lauren I spent much of my career helping very smart people little technical knowledge (university humanities faculty) use their computers. I learned a lot and usually had fun doing it. (My favorite moment was when a much-honored professor told me, “I’m a scholar; I don’t want to learn anything new!”)
