On Twitter it’s like I can’t feel the ground under my feet. I don’t know who can hear me or what subset of people l’m listening to. I get dizzy. Here I can visualize the audience and also hear them. It feels physically different.

@TedUnderwood This isn't yet true for me. Despite everything, I still find my time on Twitter more useful than my time on Mastodon. But I am pleased that Mastodon is now experiencing sustained growth and not just periodic influxes from the latest Twitter outrage.

@jtheibault I’m not sure how different my experience is. I probably likewise get more useful intelligence from Twitter; it’s much bigger, for one thing. I’m describing a phenomenology that I don’t mean as a full judgment on the platforms

@jtheibault And the phenomenology may also depend on how many ppl one is following, on either platform

@TedUnderwood Almost certainly! And also how frequently one engages in conversation at all. I don't post all that frequently on Twitter, but I see this is only my 71st post on Mastodon.

@TedUnderwood @jtheibault can you hire someone to follow people on here? I find it so time consuming to find people because of the different servers

@adam_crymble it was a lot easier back when Movetodon was working. Twitodon will still get you some. There are also lists of academics in a given field that you can mass import as a csv and follow en masse. Also if you’re having trouble just clicking on people —being forced to visit them “at home” on their server—that is a little dependent on instance and client. It can be easier.
