The bundling video streaming services are rapidly becoming indistinguishable from the cable services' behaviors that inspired so-called "cord cutters" cancelling cable TV services in preference for Internet-only services. Prices keep going up as they include more and more "niche" channels with small viewerships, that nobody would pay for if they weren't forced to as the price of receiving the channels that they actually want to see. This often includes forcing sports channels on people who loathe sports channels.

@arvrrob FOX News is not the same as the others. As the #1 cable service by far, it would be impossible to operate without including it.

@lauren @arvrrob it should be optional tho. Cable pays content providers, right? Is there some kinda guarantee or floor typically?I have pretty minimal FiOS TV pkg. It only auto includes Fox. I can choose 5 custom channels, incl CNN, MSNBC, etc. But I can't not-choose Fox.So 'biggest'? hmph

@lauren example of such 'bundling video streaming services'? Like Hulu maybe? Cause of all streamers we have, that's the only one that I think of as a bundler

@MdPoppa @arvrrob Usually the systems have to pay based on number of subs on the total system. So whether or not you watch is immaterial (and, well, optional).

@lauren I want to be legal. I want to reward good content creators so they make more of what I like. But they also keep make being a "pirate" more tempting. I have the skills, the tech and the bandwidth. I hear the wind in the sails of the ship saying come sail with me.

@lauren @arvrrob right? So the more subs (subscribers?) the cable co has, the more they have to pay the content provider? So forcing it in a pkg increases their costs?!Or I'm misunderstanding

@MdPoppa @arvrrob In the case of FOX News there's no choice. It has a larger audience than anything else on cable last time I looked. Cut it off, and you lose some dramatic percentage of your subs. And to get it, you usually also have to take other channels. This is typical for non-FOX providers also.

@lauren @arvrrob Understood. But sayin', in my situation/pkg, if Vz is gonna allow folk to pick 5 channels, why force Fox? Ofc could just be Vz playing fabs, or having investments, or it's contractual...But it annoys me š

@lauren I'm happy to pay to pay for individual shows, but I want DRM-free downloads! If these "streaming services" don't want to give me that, I'll see what other options are out there. So far I'm loving most of what I'm finding!

@lauren I sort of wonder what the HBO Max/Discovery+ tie-up is going to lead to (pricing on the combined replacement, for example). I have no interest in D+ content, yet Iāll probably be stuck with it because I want the HBO Max content.

@lauren @alaric My reaction, to the industry:- donāt reward it, when you can- watch 1-2 episodes of a series at a time- or two series (like main course + dessert)- at the end of each series, cancel the sub immediately- let it expire, and pick a replacement show, and sign up- when possible, make these shows a DVD box set instead(until 2020, I was sitting on a LOT of unwatched box sets)(and to be honest, I had a mental to-do list of streaming shows)Donāt give irrational loyalty. Companies are very rationally loyal to you.

@lauren Unfortunately, the economics and demand models force themselves in that direction. The vMVPDs have a huge chunk of subscribers who subscribe for sports, and the carriage deals are all or none. Blowing that up will take reworking sports compensation broadly, and while itās starting to happen, will take years to shake out. Arguably, the next generation that never grew up on cable will be what ultimately forces it.

@lauren @timbray One major upgrade of our current system, which I doubt will go anywhere, is that it is *worlds* easier to cancel and restart streaming plans on a whim. No phone calls, no ācustomer rententionā garbage (dishonorable mention: NYT), no waiting on hold. Just *tap.*

@lauren @MdPoppa @arvrrob except your whole argument was around having to pay for channels you don't want, and you specifically cited sports, which, you know, tend to be pretty popular too. So I guess I'm wondering why you think people should have to put up with a right wing misinformation channel they don't want but you draw the line at channels of people playing games?

@lauren @timbray yup, I never signed up for cable out of college. Swore Iād have OTA plus a la carte shows. Streaming-only made that impossible.15 years on Iām just fucking stealing everything. Fuck these people. They donāt want my money to make art. They want my money to find ways to destroy art and get tax write-offs for it. Iām done, and I think itās in the air this year, a lot of others are too.

@lauren @MdPoppa @arvrrob political content should be on separate paid tier same as sports. Fox is 100% political content. All subscribers should not be forced to subsidize political talk or sports leagues. Or religious content for that matter.
