Poor rural to hacker pipeline is real.

My theory is that those in such conditions have to repair things, or make new things from other items... and this is what ignites the hacker X-gene so to speak.

@thegibson If you can't fix it, you don't own it!

Standing knee deep in freezing water to fix a broken telephone cable at age 12/13 so I could get the line stable to get the modem usable again...I'll never forget that.But making a simple circuit like that... it just ignites a "why not?" that never really leaves.

@miah @thegibson My elitist bias blinded me of this obvious reality until I read about the John Deere nonsense:https://doctorow.medium.com/about-those-kill-switched-ukrainian-tractors-bc93f471b9c8

My first simple circuit was at age 5.I remember my dad had showed my how to light a bulb off a 9 volt battery a few months earlier, and I guess, I actually built a stupid simple logic board using a hole punch, a piece of cardboard, electrical tape, and a battery and bulb...I wrote simple math on the left side of the cardboard holes, and answers on the other side, then I would just touch the wires to the matches to make them light up. This was at the same house, and year that we got a Sinclair ZX81, and I learned to write in Basic.

But I really just wanted the world I was dreaming of.A world where there were magical things that I understood how to do.wow... that was a bit to unpack there.and to a five yr. old, it was magical.and here I am today... I guess.

@toolbear @thegibson Yup, also look into newer cars with full infotainment/dashboard systems instead of some gauges.I was thinking about the future of car mechanics after I saw this article on 'ethernet for automotive communication'.I can't imagine the equipment you'll need to just _get started_ working on vehicles, tractors, etc in the very near future.https://www.analog.com/en/thought-leadership/why-10base-t1s-is-the-missing-ethernet-link.html

@miah @toolbear I don't much like barriers to entry.

@thegibson@hackers.town @miah@hachyderm.io @toolbear@union.place we have cool gadgets already, don't worry 😉 simple things like bluetooth "elm327" OBD-II readers already speak the new CAN-based protocols.if my ECU ever dies i'm going to order one of these first: https://speeduino.com/home/
