'Every successful Google product except search and gmail is an acquisition: mobile, ad-tech, videos, server management, docs, calendaring, maps, you name it. The company desperately wants to be a "making things" company, but it's actually a "buying things" company.'Cory Doctorow (@pluralistic) looks at the, frankly chilling, idea that Google wants to use an AI chatbot to front its search engine. My skin's crawling already.https://pluralistic.net/2023/02/16/tweedledumber/#easily-spooked

@oisinmcgann @pluralistic Google is not alone in that practice. I've been in two companies that were acquired by Cisco.

@karlauerbach @oisinmcgann @pluralistic Fun fact, VideoEgg and Youtube presented at the same investor conference way back in the day, with basically the same feature-set and mission. IIRC VideoEgg had more editor features. Not that I confess to ever being around such things. It was also the time when the likes of Jim Cramer were screaming that video would take off and all those belly-up, post-bubble fiber companies were going to go to the MOON because of the bandwidth demands. But they didn't, they were forced into bankruptcy so the big boys could scoop them up for nothing, screwing the public once again. Not an honest day has ever happened in america, not a second.

@polarisera @pluralistic @oisinmcgann I was working on entertainment grade network video around 1995 and I figured out how to do dynamic product placement and even content morphing (voice changing, image/body changing, causing actor to look at viewers, etc) in reaction to events in the viewer space. Those are still goals of the current crop of net video companies. And I also satisfied demands of copyright industry. But no, the project was abandoned. Sigh. And my neighbor invented Netflix.
