So I'm not really sure what I'm going to be doing going forward. I've mainly shifted to Tumblr as my social media of choice, because of how the community works vs mastodon. Tumblr isn't a good fit for my usual tech stuff, I find, and while Twitter is right out, mastodon isn't much better to be honest.

@foone Not much better in what respects?

So the three paths forward I'm weighting up are:1. Hiatus from tech stuff for the most part. This is basically what I'm doing now. I'm still doing some hacking for the death generator and occasionally working on terrible keyboards, but I've stopped with teardowns and retrotech. This is not a good idea in the long run, honestly, but I don't know if situations will change, so it's the safest.

       2. Try to go hard into YouTube for retrotech. I have historically wanted to do this but failed at it, for a lot of reasons, mainly involving my ADHD. Maybe refocusing my attention there will get some better results these days? I've seen some improvement in my writing after all my time on Twitter, maybe it'll be easier to write scripts now, which'll hopefully make the whole process of YouTube videos significantly easier?

       3. Fully pull out of retrotech/teardowns. This one makes the most financial sense, to be honest. I have to pay quite a lot to keep my collection stored, and I'm currently unemployed and not really making money off it or getting any real enjoyment from it either. I could significantly consolidate by putting stuff up on ebay/Craigslist and save a lot of money. If I'm not going to have an ongoing outlet for it, this makes the most sense.

I lied, there's a 4th path: do more tech on Tumblr. I'm mainly discounting this one because while I've done it before and had good (initial) results, it doesn't really work the same way as Twitter and mastodon, so I have to essentially build blog posts instead of the chain-of-thought ADHD rambles I'm known for. It's not a great fit for me, but I can technically do it. I'm not sure if it's as worth it as YouTube would be... I have a much smaller potential audience there.

I'm also kinda negative to this idea because one of my test posts along these lines got posted to hacker news, and that was the same relentlessly negative experience it always is, if not worse. They showed up in my messages and asks to spam slurs at me.

I'm not really considering "5: do retrotech and teardowns on mastodon" at this point. Maybe I will try again later if the culture of mastodon shifts as more people move here from Twitter? But my experience so far isn't good enough to justify continuing.

Fundamentally the problem here is that I have ADHD and that's something I have to accept. It heavily affects what types of things I can do, because I don't have the attention span for other things. It also means I have a lot of motivation problems, which makes it hard to do even the things I know I can do. And negative experiences with both mastodon and Tumblr are making it hard to get the motivation to continue my tech posting in either place, so I'm considering just stopping.

So yeah. At this point I think the most likely next step, other than the continued hiatus, is a push to do some YouTube content. I'll do a couple videos on some of my favorite topics or my terrible keyboards, see how well I can do that, and how well it's received. Then decide how to move forward from there.

The one thing I'm pretty sure will continue no matter what is the death generator. It requires basically no input to continue, and it gets used outside Twitter and mastodon, plus it's fun to work on. So I'm probably going to keep making generators off and on for a long time.

And in any case, if I do pivot to YouTube, I'll cross-post video links here, so you won't miss out on anything for that. If I end up going all in on Tumblr tech posting, I'll try to remember to link them here, but no promises. That one is harder for Reasons.

@foone @miah I encourage you to take time away from anything which is burning you out if you can do so responsibly (I’m in the US where not having a job means slowly going bankrupt if you like little things like health care, so that tolerance may vary.).

@foone I also struggle with longer form blogging for this reason. Hell, my dad, who's a fine artist, does all his paintings in a grid, one square at a time, and then puts all the squares together. (He also has ADHD, and he's often pointed to his own paintings and said "I can't paint that. But I can paint one square.")

@foone I'm not sure I made my point clear there, which is that the way he does paintings is sort of like microblogging for visual art.
