@stux I know you mean well, but you're getting dangerously close to a trope about how people in red states should "just move somewhere else". Many people, especially in that area of the country, don't have a lot of choices. They can't afford to move somewhere else, and they don't deserve to be abandoned just because the voter-suppressed elections in gerrymandered districts elected evil people to office.

@stux Possibly, but two things put me off that:1) The video's so low resolution it's hard to tell2) Oils and other things that produce rainbow shimmer do so by being lighter than water. I can't think of anything that'd sit below the water unseen, be stirred up, and then shimmer for a while on top.

@stux This is not a new development for Ohio. Even ignoring the Cuyahoga (the most prominent of America's many burning rivers), Ohio's waterways have been terrible for years. Between mine runoff, farm runoff, and fracking...

@stux Agreed. For many people in that area, their only choice is for the government to step up. If Flint, MI, or Jackson, MS, are any indication, government help seems unlikely. That leaves it to NGOs and local non-profits to try to help the people there, which is truly tragic.

@stux As someone actively in Ohio, yet 100+ miles/3 hours away, I can say that yes, it is bad, but there's no reason for people in ALL of Ohio to go anywhere.Areas nearby to East Palestine are absolutely terrible, that's clear. Areas downstream/wind have had it bad since the accident, but the further you are, the more that has already dissipated. Nearby cities that gather their water via SURFACE wells are definitely going to need more testing. Here in Athens, our water/air is totally fine.

@stux Yes! Honestly the wildlife and nature in areas of northeastern Ohio will be affected for generations, I really don't mean to downplay the severity of what happened, especially for those within a close radius or with loved ones there.Fish, cattle, water, it is all really difficult for folks up there right now. I just wanted to give another perspective from a rural yet progressive city that isn't quite so close. We are worried, yes, but prepared and doing the 'right' things (we hope)!

@stux Horrific. So many Ohio creeks and rivers were already polluted with industrial, mining, and agricultural waste. Pretty little creeks near my Ohio home contained heavy metals from tile manufacture. I lived in Muskingum watershed where literally millions of pounds of toxic chemicals were dumped over the years. The sad saga of turning Ohio's bountiful fresh water assets into toxic cesspools continues. It breaks my heart.

@mattwilcox @stux There are several streams like this one that do this (and they are not connected to this one). Two of the streams were already independently tested and considered contaminated. Not only that, but further down stream from where this lady is in the video, it opens up to a fishing area. None of the fish are alive now. So don't be quick to dismiss the contamination.

@alienghic Oh, yeah. Hurricanes have their own wrinkle with the "just move" crowd. If you have a home that is very vulnerable to hurricanes, no one is going to buy it from you. You have to abandon the house and start from scratch from whatever other savings you might have. It's just not possible for most people.

@eagerpebble I do want to well actually myself and mention that research was on America.Over in Cuba, when faced with a hurricane the Government sends buses to pick up everyone along the coast and move them to safety inland. They also have regular training exercises so they can identify who needs extra help to evacuate.https://press.un.org/en/2004/iha943.doc.htmThe US could evacuate people at risk but both chooses not to, and has so little social trust that few would go even if they offered evacuation help.
