Do you want features like an #email client, #contacts & #tasks management or a #VPN in your #browser?

@Defizit I know that.. But all the browsers call it a VPN.. :blobcatverysad:I want to figure out if I am the only one who thinks most browsers are just bloated with stuff I have dedicated software for.

@wilson I Just told a friend that Netscape was great! No useless stuff nobody wants. Just a browser doing browsing stuff :blobcatjoy:

@stanford I miss when browsers were just browsers and didn't need 20 gimmicks to sell themselvesif it weren't for Google being Google, Chrome would honestly be the best browser because it just does what it's supposed to and doesn't get in the way

@stanford@open-social.xyz I remember the old Netscape had pretty much all that, even IM, but without the VPN. But of course if we speak of Chromium, we all know what that's going to be used for.

@stanford i want my browser to browse. if i wanna do other things in it (email, task management) i'll go to the sites i use for that. The multi-tool-ification of browsers just leaves everything feeling like chromeOS where you can't control your own tools because they're all glued to each other.

@meko @lewdum @yayroos I guess if you put everything into one application, you could (if you do it right) save some resources. (CPU/RAM)But I guess that is also a huge security risk..My thought is rather the other way around. What resources are wasted by adding these functions to the browser but not using them? Not only in terms of CPU and RAM, but also in terms of developers. If all the time and work that would be put into these functions would be put into the browser itself? How much better would it be? Would we then perhaps have firefox that is as fast and performant as google chrome? Or a browser that doesn't need like 1G RAM per website :blobcatjoy:

@stanford @meko @yayroos I was typing a reply but honestly stanford already made most of the important points. but consider also that you only really save resources if the users decide to use your embedded mail client, which a lot of them will ignore in favor of apps they already use or think do the job better.probably the most lightweight way to combine browser and mail client would be to make the mail client into a web app and open it as a tab, but at that point it's not specific to the browser anymore, so...

@lewdum In general, I am in favour of making just a browser and using addons for well.. additional features you would like to have :blobcatjoy:First of all, you don't run software you don't use. And you actually have the choice to use what you want and not be locked into one ecosystem.
