About 125 years ago, Josephus Daniels ran the News and Observer, the newspaper in Raleigh, North Carolina. Daniels deliberately blew up any story of Black men being around white women, even incidental encounters that neither party expected. This was back when the Democrats were the Klan party.Other than technology improving to make things faster, there’s little difference between Daniels trying to get people killed and the fascists now using scare tactics and mass communication to get people killed. @bookstodon @histodons On top of that, when Alexander Manly, a Black newspaper editor, published an op/ed talking about the rampant unpunished rape of Black women by white men his paper barely survived the white outrage afterwards.Plus a white woman named Rebecca Felton was allowed to give speeches in public calling for the mass lynching of Black men to scare them away from being near white women - she also wanted white women to be able to vote. 1890s Phyllis Schlafly?

@GrittyLipids @histodons @bookstodon It's so odd hearing about miscegenation being seen as a bad thing. At the same time all this was happening, my ancestors were screwing their way from western Asia to Europe and finally over to America. Don't think they met a colour they didn't like.

When slave owners raped their slaves, they saw it as using their property.Those same men saw white women as their property as well, which meant that Black men would be stepping out of line and "stealing" their women.It's not about genetics, it's about maintaining a system of power.

@elliswyatt @bookstodon @KeanBean @histodons What’s more, if the women got pregnant the owners frequently saw the children as a free increase to their property. A few treated such children as humans, most saw them as new slaves they didn’t have to pay for.

To suggest that it had to do with slavery and producing more slaves may have been the case for those who could profit from slavery, but most of the racist types weren't slave owners, but did it anyways.

@elliswyatt@GrittyLipids @bookstodon @histodons I'm just trying to point out that the idea of miscegenation is more complicated than a few weirdos obsessed with genetic purity. It's way to rationalize, obscure, propagate, and strengthen a system that a huge swath of people benefited from, even if they weren't consciously or vocally in favor of slavery. By interacting with the concept of miscegenation on a surface level, we're missing the whole point of it.
