Ugh.. I really can't stand it.. :sad_cat: I totally get that the amount is going up somewhat when people pay late but I cannot accept the fact it's 10 times the original amount.. :amaze: Not only is it legal but it's a freaking business model :amaze: Aren't there any laws for this or caps? I mean, how is this fair in planet Mars, let alone Earth.. I've been in a bad place in the past where the money issue almost ended my life, it's hard to trust a system that fucks you over each time :(

@stux Have they got a leg to stand on?If they'd been constantly chasing you and you'd been ignoring them then probably, but to suddenly turn around and go oh LOL he's a bill from 2 years ago seems a bit dubious.

@stux I've had the same thing because our dentist had our old address. The way to go is talk to your dentist, and they will instruct the debt collector to change everything back to a normal amount.

I know it's mostly a 'dream' to make things more fair but I feel I cannot give up on that how unlikey it all may seemI may be a dreamer but at least I know what I'm fighting for 💪 :blobcathighfive: Hoomans need to be more fair to each other, animals and the planet, only that way we will stand a chance in the future I think :blobcathearts:

@stux@mstdn.social luckily im soon (in 6 weeks) debt free from all those late fees and inkasso companies (companies that buy debt and then put fees to your already added fees on top of your original invoice).

@stux i have largely given up the belief that debt is even real. debt IS a business model. ever notice how good friends don't terrorise you if you can't pay back but just let it slide? that's how humans usually interact. when they begin to hunt you down for the debt, that's business.

@stux between two people who are friends, you don't go and harass them for money they don't have, unless you're broke yourself. and these lenders and debt collecting companies are NOT broke. they have taken loss into account. i wouldn't feel bad if i were you. if you can't pay a bill, you're part of a calculated risk they took.

@stux seeing as they're always wanting to earn extra, they'll bother you quite a lot with threatening letters and phone calls, but that's basically their business model.

@stux and companies that advertise credit for shopping are the worst. they don't earn much if most customers pay within the 30-to-45 day limit. that's just money going back and forth.there HAS to be people who struggle to pay for them to make money. it's highly exploitative.

@stux i don't think it should be legal. the bible actually bans it as a sin known as usury. what *should* be incentivised is helping a friend out. if you give some money to help a broke friend, you should get a tax cut and the friend who got the help should get a tax exemption.

@stux tax laws will give you reduced taxes if you donate to charity but not if you help a friend out. but helping a friend IS charity.

@thor Tue but the fucked thing is..Those debt collection companies have so much power they can close everything.. my bank accounts, my company they can even kick me out of my house if it comes to it

@stux perhaps they have such powers in the Netherlands. i don't know how it works over there. the law here limits their powers a bit. yes, they can force me to sell a home if i own it, and a car if i own it, and possibly also stocks i own in a business (but this can be circumvented). but it takes quite a lot for them to go and take money from my bank accounts, or enter my home, or close bank accounts. closes thing i've personally experienced to that is that they took possession of the security deposit to an apartment i once rented. so i had to ask my parents to help provide a new one for the place i'm currently renting. it's insane, because a security deposit on an apartment isn't wealth in practice - that money is locked up unless there's a problem when i move out - and you usually take the deposit from the last apartment and use it for the next - i don't think it should be legal to seize such deposits since they're necessary for moving.

@stux it's also quite fucked up that no matter what i tell the debt collectors, they won't listen to me, but if i bring in a third party to negotiate on my behalf, such as a lawyer or someone with the welfare services, they'll listen to them. they assume you're a liar, so they need to hear it from somebody else.
