This year in May I'm going to keynote at the International PHP Conference on defending the web that people actually can participate in not just as consumers but as active participants. "Defending the 'we' in 'web'" https://phpconference.com/web-development/defending-the-we-in-web/

@tante I think the widespread availability of affordable LAMP-stack hosting combined with more or less easy-to-install software for that stack has allowed more people to participate in the open web than anything else.It is a shame that this apparently isn't possible for fediverse software...

@tante If you remove the "we" from the "web" only the "b" (...usiness) remains. That's deep.

@jollyorc People laugh at me, but I think PHP was the literal best. You could start building teeny tiny things on the web by copying some code and dropping it into your HTML file. It was such a good field for experimentation and play. These days you get a "Hello World in React, here's a week long course on how to set up the build chain that won't work in 3 months" kinda stuff. That's exactly a thing I want to tackle: How much our "professionalism" is excluding people, how the complexity of our stacks and environments make it hard to get into this profession (or just into doing stuff on the web). Metaverse and Web3 and "AI" are mostly just the current hot topics that all have similar gravitational pull making everyone powerless and passive.
